You can gain the same proteins from beans, mushrooms, soya and other vegetarian products. Or if you want to make it easier for yourself, you can be like me: a pescatarian. You could add seafood to your menu. It's meat, too, but fish don't really feel pain.

I'm going to post on the topic but first man is an animal. Survival of the fittest. If a lion eats a gazelle that's okay. Man eats lion that's okay. It's nature and we are a part of nature.

Unlike the lion, we don't need to eat meat to survive. We used to be vegetarian.

As stupid as this may sound, I had more problems with shooting at animals then I had with shooting at humans. Granted the humans had guns and where shooting at me, I was mentally conditioned to react, not to think about the morals of it, as a teenager my uncle would take me hunting, and I would dwell on the fact that I was about to kill a defenseless animal, which we would eat. On the other hand I have no problem going fishing, and eating the fish i catch.I really do not like hunting, because it is the one sport that alcohol really does not go well with.
And jonnie is very right the world is overpopulated, maybe giving everyone a gun and a bottle of whiskey would help cut down on that problem.

In the time of the dinosaurs, there were more plains, but as the climate got warmed, trees started to grow and form forests. That's the biggest reason why the mammoths went extinct.
Altough there are natural plains, most of the crops in Europe, but also in North- and South America, are due to deforestation. The point I was trying to make is that man destroyed much of the habitat of the wildlife. It is therefore wrong to call them pests just because it is in the disinterest of agriculture.

Now back to the topic on hand.

1. It's your call to make. You know better how your kid will react to it. I know that if you take a dog when it's to young out it can get terrified of the gun noise that first time and it never likes the sound after-wards. If you don't think you kid can appreciate the tradition or understand that it's really just reliving like our ancestors did back in the day then don't send your kid out there. Also your kid DOES need to be able to comprehend gun safety and the reasoning behind it.

2. I grew up in the south, I got a BB gun when I was 3-5 a 4-10 (small shotgun) when I was 5-6 a 22 when I was 6-8 a 12-gauge (bigger than a 4-10) when I was 9-10 and shot a rifle when I was 11.

3. I believe I can make a good point that being around guns made me the hunter I am. I only shoot what I eat (something your kid can learn). What I don't eat I make sure it isn't wasted. (Given to pet dogs or taken out for the birds). If your kid goes out there it's also tradition for him/her to help clean it and get an understanding of why it had to be killed to feed.

4. Make sure you take into account the mental ramnifications. You don't want your kid afraid of guns. Afraid of blood. Make sure he/she can handle that portion too.
