Thirty Years' War Map

Post by PerseusSpartacus » Sat Jan 16, 2016 8:46 pm

Okay, so I've done most of the work on a new map I've designed, based loosely on the Thirty Years' War. I say loosely because much of the fighting in this map takes place outside of Germany (unlike the real Thirty Years' War, in which the vast majority of the campaigning occurred somewhere within the Holy Roman Empire), and because England is featured as a major player (the Anglo-Dutch Allies). Here's some images for you:

The map seems fairly well-balanced, though it would need a lot of human testing. On some of the Polymath bot tests I ran, the game went back and forth for many turns, with it remaining unclear who would win until maybe two-thirds to three-fourths of the way through. As I said, it's not the most realistic version of the Thirty Years' War, but it's certainly fun.

I'm wondering, though, if I should hold back to release this map until the Beta gets some of its bugs ironed out (this is a large map and it would be nice if players could enjoy it at full size instead of the reduced version you're limited to now). What do you guys think?

From my experience, the most historically accurate maps do not usually play well. When making maps a focus on balance and playability can certainly take a front seat to historical correctness.

Alright, the final product is officially complete and available in the Plugin Manager for all to download. I've changed how it looks a good bit. Here's some screenshots:

This should make a challenging but straight-forward map, and I'm eager to see what people think of it. Enjoy!
