Albums You've Heard Recently for the First Time

Post by paranoiarodeo » Sun May 24, 2015 11:44 am

(THREAD DISCLAIMER: Not old favorites, only albums that you yourself have heard recently for the first time, even if they're old albums.)

wikipedia.org: Sufjan Stevens / Carrie & Lowell

I tend to listen past the lyrics for the most part which might have something to do with my youthful love of everything jazz, classical, psychedelic, etc. Of course, I can quote most lyrics from the usual suspects, but there's lots of new music that kinda goes in one of my ears and out the other, especially if I've been listening while doing other things online. I remember the tunes, and maybe a few clever phrases here and there, but the majority of words escape me. I suspect this album is one I'll revisit time to time again, if only to try and hold onto more of the written sentiments than I usually do. Might have something to do with losing both of my own parents; my mother ten years and my father two years ago; neither of whom I was prepared to let go. This album doesn't leave me weeping uncontrollably, but I do find myself tearing up unexpectedly and often, if only for the sound of it all, both melodies and lyrics together. It demands some thoughtful listening away from the outside world. It brings on moods, and sometimes, but not always, that's precisely what you want or need from music.

I saw this trio perform at a house concert a little while ago, and have been enjoying their latest album since then. Heart-centered folk music:

Thanks guys, I've liked everything that's been posted so far.

For my submission, I'm going to expand upon the term "recently" to include anything I've heard within the last few years, because this is really the last complete album that I've loved from start to finish. It's electronic music which I know isn't everyone's bag, but I think it's pretty accessible and I have turned people on to it who are not great fans of electronic music. I'm not really into the electronic scene either, but the metalhead lurking in me is attracted to this writer's intensity and creative song structures. I find that it's excellent music to lux to :)

I've posted other music by him before, but I have kind of taken it upon myself to proselytize for this guy because I think he deserves to be better-known. He cites Daft Punk as an influence, but I consider his music far superior.

Highlights are the first track "Polkamatic" for its creativity, "My Friend Dario" for its popular accessibility, and "Trahison" for general badassery. If you're a fan of music videos I'd suggest looking his up, as well, because his kick ass (the videos for "Stamina" and "Fade Away" stand out as good examples).

Natalie Merchant "Leave your Sleep"

I was almost shocked by how good this is. I love 10,000 maniacs and I have liked Merchant's solo works. But this is an intact project with an authenticity that she really locked down. The different Poems are combines with music from different traditions. African American spiritual, Classical, Klezmer, ....She writes music that goes with the chldren's poems. She teams up with artist from those music types. The music is not just Merchant "flavoured" in these styles. The klezmer IS klezmer set to a story about a dancing bear. This here is some diverse talent. I think there are 20 songs in all. If you get the physical copy you get a booklet that is more like a small book. I think it's worth the extra few bucks.

Worth the price of admission for the first track. It's all straightforward singer/songwriter jams that sit on nice lo-fi guitar grooves.

Dear Bo Jackson (2014), Gutter Gaunt Gangster (2011), and Rumspringa (2009), by The Weeks ... in the interest of expanding my horizons to include Mississippi music that isn't the blues.

I kinda like 'em.

Band out of Colorado that played for free at our city park last night. Their first album drops on August 21, 2015...

Same tune as they played it live on the Tonight Show: http://www.nbc.com/fallon-tonight/video ... ob/2888764

For Llama (& Co.):

Natalie Merchant- Rhyme of Innocence and Experience

Alela Diane- the Ocean

Beautiful yet slightly melancholy folkish-type songs that tell a story although I feel like you might have already heard them.

I've been enjoying "Rock Or Bust" from AC/DC. They are usually hit or miss with me and this album has some really good tracks.

LOL... I got pretty excited when I saw them too! "Good shit" is accurate and they found a unique sound that works for them.
