which platform packages do i need to create a map generator?
i see biohazard uses java.awt.image so i know i probably need that.
anything else from this site?

(i am just beginning in java so i'm looking to see what i need to focus on to make a map generator. any general layout of how everything works would be appreciated.)

To create a java map generator, you should install the Java Development Kit (JDK). It will have all the packages you need. You can download it off this page (just the normal one, not any of the bundles):
