The above is a position I recently reached in a chess game I played at a local tournament. I am Black, and it's black to move. What should I play? (I'll tell the move I played later/tomorrow)

I'm thinking .... Bd3

If Bd1 then .... Bb6 saccing the bishop to push e3, e2 and after taking White's white bishop to use your own white-square bishop to mop up the A & B pawns before white's blacksquare bishop can get it's act together

if Bxd3 then Pxd3 then it seems like black should be able to force the king down to threaten the black-square bishop and middle pawns.

The move I played (and am fairly proud of) 1... h5!

If 2) Kxh5, then 2)...Bg4, and he can't stop mate with 3)...Bd8#
If 2) gxh5, Bf1# mate!

so I get a free take on g4!

ummm....what??? h5 has a black pawn on it already, no? do you mean h4? and how do you get a free take on g4 when no one is there?
and if so, what's to stop white from pxh4....?

Did you put up a different image than you intended?

what happens if

Bf2:

Bxg3

Next do a bishop trade?

Or is my brain still off?

But this is won for black, and I was able to win off the following moves (starting from the position in the diagram. I did not take on g3, by the way, I invaded with my king. Get a board Razz

here's the ending of the game, with my annotations.
1..h4! 2 Kg2? (2. g4+ seems more resistant, with 2..Bxg4+ Kxh4 -but 3. Bd6! and black can make progress while white is in zugzwang (any move he makes weakens his position)) Kg4 3. gxh4 Bf3+ 4. Kg1 Kh3! 5. Bf2 Bd6 6. Be1 Bf8 7. Bf2 Bh6 8. Kf1 Kh2 9. Bg1+ Kh1 10. Bf2 Bg4 11. Bg3 Bxe3 12. Bc7 Bd2 13. h5 Bg5 14. Bxa5 e3 15. Bd3 Bh4 0-1

(resigning rather than being mated with 16. Bxb4 e2+ 17. Bxe2 Bh3 mate.

Looks good to me, though I still like d3 as well as h4, i think both get the job done.

Congrats Smile

Swell Manimal, you capitalized on a defenseless king in a corner...

Now, if you could complete your games in this tournament, we'd all appreciate it. You may have noticed everyone's waiting on you?

g6. (I'm assuming the board is upside-down and black is at the bottom.)

How about this position?

Hmmm....that's a toughie. I'd guess it'll take 2 days 20 hours and 30 minutes and maybe an additional 1 day 16 hours and 11 minutes to come up with a good response.....

If you beat me, THEN you can call me a jerk for taking so long. Otherwise, I haven't flagged, have I? Besides, you took a good week off yourself..

OK...

a) I was away for a 4 days - a peer leadership weekend with students. I posted here to let you know, as that seemed a sort of thoughtful thing to do, rather than simply let my time run for four days with no word (as if I'd forgot or something). When I'm home, I move more or less daily, and several times a day if i can.

b) I fail to see why the (very) eventual outcome of the game should have any bearing on whether anyone should be upset by your move rate. If it were only me, I really wouldn't care, but there are ten other people who can't continue THEIR tournament until you finish your games. You're not on vacation and seem to have plenty of time to post puzzles and diagrams in the forums... do you NEED to use the whole 3 days for every move?

Of course, you are well within your rights to do so... but you shouldn't be surprised that people are getting grumpy. Most of the other games I've played have been one move per day and 3 days timebank.

Another position from a recently played game. White to move and win!

g6 is very very close to the correct move. It's the right idea, however after g6 cxd3, black would win.

The correct move is Rxb3! when cxb3 is forced, and white follows up with the thematic g6!

I don't see how G6 can be followed by cxd3 as isn't g6 check?

i.e.

g6+ f7
e5

is clearly a win for white, while

g6+ e8
re3+ looks like it will work as well, no?

I don't know what board you're looking at. g6 is the left-most white pawn. Manimal's move is Rxb3, which is the top-most black pawn, THEN g6. which makes sense. it eliminates any possibility of a black promotion (teehee).

Look again, that pawn is actually at g5.
g6 is the knight's move, to put black in check.

And, as clueless noobie not-so-cluelessly pointed out, black can hardly respond with ...cxd3 if he's in check, now can he?

I'm in the hospital with him right now - they have wireless. Wink

He's 7 years old and severely bipolar. He's been on meds for years, but they tend to work on and off, and need to be changed frequently. He's started to just wander out of the house when no one is looking and be gone for hours - kind of scary behavior for a 7-year-old. He's in a psych ward for evaluation and to try and get his meds more stable, but he seems fine at the moment.

Unfortunately his mom - my sister-in-law - needs meds too, but won't admit it.

UC, the problem with mani's last diagram was that it was upside-down; black was on the bottom. g6 is a pawn move. Of course, it's gone now, so I guess it matters not.

Yes, I see the reversed board. Evenso, g6 could have been either, a pawn move or the knight's destination.
Since the pawn move did nothing and knight to g6 began a game-ending attack, I hope we were talking about the knight.

Sorry to be so grumpy, Mani, but I've been saving chessatwork spots forever for this tourney.
If you want to brag about your nifty moves, what better way to show them off than to actually play them?
