It's a mad mad mad mad March! (Rules & Game)

Post by Schroberts » Sun Mar 17, 2013 6:56 pm

Bracketologists, ready your pencils... the game is on!
Image
Make your picks, using the methodology of your choice (team seed, season performance, jersey color, coolest mascot, college town you've been the drunkest in... all are acceptable methods). I've posted this year's bracket below, and will update throughout the tourney as games are won. I've also PM'd each player a printable copy of the bracket to be filled out.

Image

Take a day, or two, or even three to make your selections, but PLEASE make sure to return them to me by Wednesday, March 20, or Thursday morning at the very latest, as the first round of basketball games begin that day (March 21). If you turn in your bracket to me after games have already been played, you will be disqualified. Sorry, no exceptions here.

How It Works:
(My apologies to those who are very familiar with the March Madness tourney and how brackets work... I'm trying to explain this as simply as possible for those non college basketball friends who signed up, those adventurous souls!)
The NCAA College Basketball Championship is comprised of 64 teams (again, I'm not counting those silly "first four" teams in the the play-in games. Silliness, I say!). Those 64 teams play single elimination over 6 rounds, until 1 team is crowned champion. So for our purposes, each player will pick a winner for each matchup, moving those winners on round by round until a champion is picked.

Scoring Rules:
The base score for each correct pick will increase round by round.
  • round --> base score
    • 1 = 1
      2 = 2
      3 = 4
      4 = 6
      5 = 8
      6 = 10
This way, someone who makes a lot of bad picks in the first round isn't necessarily out of the running early on, and still has a chance to catch up if they've made good picks in later rounds. Some bracket challenges increase the base score per round much more drastically, but I like this set up because it doesn't place all the emphasis on correctly picking the championship team. So, say you made many many correct picks, but failed to correctly pick the champion, you could still feasibly win.

This base score for each correct pick will then be multiplied by the seed for the winning team (each team is giving a ranking seed for their region by the powers that be). This helps to reward people for correctly picking an upset, and spices things up a bit.
  • For example:
    In round 3, the lovely TSK wildly picks a #8 seed to beat a #1 seed, and when round 3 comes along, the #8 seed wins! TSK's score for this pick would be 32 (4 base points for a correct round 3 pick, multiplied for 8 points for the seed of the winning team).

    One more example:
    In round 5, Lantern correctly picks a #2 seed to win. Lantern's score for this pick would be 16 (8 base points for the round X 2 points for the seed).
Each player's points for each round will be added up for their round total, and each round total will be added up for their overall total. The player with the most points after the championship game wins! In case of a tie, I will ask every player to guess the score of the championship game when they turn in their brackets, and the person closest to the actual score will break the tie.

Got it? Confused? Good!

Feel free to post any questions here, or send me a PM. I'll do my best to clear up any uncertainty!

I regret to inform you that no llamas will be enthusiastically participating in this game. It really is with much regret. I am still enthusiastic for all of the rest of you though.

Bracketologists, you have until 12:15pm Eastern tomorrow, at the start of the first game, to turn in your brackets... don't be late! And good luck!

Either it was the fact that I am brain dead and just starting my coffee, or because I rarely see jokes from Shock... but I thought this was funny!

It's weird I was planning on signing her up for "Goat Fanciers Monthly", and you can imagine my surprise when I discovered that she was already a "premium member" (?) :shock:

Schrob,
Will you be uploading everyone's PDFs of their brackets before these first games finish?
You can use imgur for this.

Otherwise, we have no idea if things are being done fairly. You could literally be changing your bracket as you go, and we'd have no idea.

It's not really a question of if or what I think. You're supposed to be able to see each other's brackets.

I kind of agree. Everyone had to send it to her, so we should all have access.

I agree they should be posted so we can keep track of how much I'm whooping your asses based on Cluebaby's choices but only because it's FUN not because Schrobby is likely to shiny-herself

It has been my plan all along to make everyone's brackets available for all to see. Since everyone used different bracket pages and methods of getting their picks to me, I've entered everyone's picks onto the standardized system at cbssports.com I was waiting on those last minute stragglers to get theirs in before I made any public, but since the deadline has come and gone, I will make all the brackets viewable now.

I completely agree that it's more fun when everyone can follow along each other's brackets.

For the record, since I had to input my picks before the deadline like anyone else, there's no possible way I could be changing my bracket as we go. Just sayin'. ;)

Also, my internet has been basically useless for the last couple of days, so tasks that would normally take me about 10 minutes to complete are taking more like and hour to complete. I'm beyond frustrated, and getting a new ISP hooked up tomorrow, so hopefully that will solve the problem.

So... I can't guarantee that I will have everything available to all by the end of this first game today, but I'm working on it. Cross your fingers that my internet decides to work with me here.

Did you actually add us to the CBS site so we can live-track our brackets vs. the competition, or will we have to manually track things?

I added your brackets to the site to have a consistent method of keeping tabs on everyone's picks and the scoring, but did not give each of you your own sign-ins and passwords... it's actually a whole different process to get each of you access to the bracket.

My idea was that this year everything would take place within the forum itself, so that people wouldn't have to worry about registering for another website and constantly checking another website in order to participate in a lux forum game.

But believe me, I will be posting score updates for all to see on a regular basis! No need to worry your pretty little head with all that math.

Ok, well I got shillelaghed today. I had three losing picks from today going on to win their next round game, so those are already Round 2 losses. Hope there are a few surprising upsets tomorrow to help me.
