i just played this demo of this new sillysoft game for a while and I must say I really love it... although the graphics could be better, the unique half puzzle half zelda like gameplay makes it to one of the most enjoyable games i have seen in the last few years...
Before i spend another 20 bucks for the whole version to sillysoft or whoever else will get them I have some questions...
1.) There are already some rooms in the demo were it took me a long time and a lot of trying to figure out how to solve them. For case I am not able to make a room, is there still a way to get past it or do I have to finsih some rooms in order to get to the next ones? I mean might it happen that i stuck at one room and the game becomes pointless as I have no chance to play other levels?
2.) Is everything deterministic or are there random elements? I mean I figured out the algorithm for this funny little bees, but for example the master bees seem to move randomly and this funny sorcerer in the thirs level of the demo seemed to do whatever he wanted to? Is this randomly or does everything follow a certain rule, that means is the game solveable by thinking alone or do just have to wait for a lucky try?
3.) IS the game really as good as I got the feeling after the demo?
Thx for some answers
\\Geiler

Geiler is talking about DROD, a great new game that I have added to the Sillysoft website. It was not created by me, but I get some of the money form the copies that get sold from here.
To answer your questions:
1. There are some secret rooms that you can find, but do not have to finish. I am not sure if you have to finish all of everything else. I do know that there is help available for all the rooms, so if you get stuck you can find a way around it.
2. The 'bees' are supposed to be cockroaches. The queens will try to run far away from you. The 'socerer' slayer dude seems to have some random elements, but he always tracks out his wisp and then follows that. So you can lead him around in circles and stuff.
3. YES, the rest of the game is as good as the demo. It has become an internet cult classic, with a huge community, and tons of extra stuff. Take a look at the DROD forums for a look-see at the full madness.
I found DROD one day and played it a bunch. I thought it was great, so I decided to offer it here. Everyone should go check out the free demo of DROD to see... |

I refuse to acknowledge or believe that any online game besides Lux exists, or has ever existed.
I refuse to acknowledge or believe that any online chat can take place anywhere other than under an exploding map.
I refuse to acknowledge or believe that any drink, drug, or sexual practice could be so damn addictive as this Lux needle hanging from my arm.
How's that for a cult mantra?

Very cool game! I'm definitely a fan of it and since it isn't cheating (on Lux) it's that much better The slayer dude and the overall commentary/conversation that the characters have is hilarious.
It's another fun addictive game ... which isn't what I need in my life but what the heck, I plan on buying it soon as well
That's cool to see that your sharing the love online here Dustin. I'll definitely purchase it from the link on the Sillysoft site.

| wait till you play through a few levels, there are some guys in there a lot cooler than the slayer. Some of the parts in the game become a lot more difficult. I'm already through almost half the game, and let me tell you the first 3 levels are like playing against a group of angry bots and some of the other levels are like playing a group of reapers times 1,000. Very very very cool game |

Kinda late reply, but...
There is no random behavior in DROD (other than purely cosmetic effects like blood particle explosions). It is a design rule of DROD. The Slayer is one of the harder creatures to predict, but most elements are designed with intuitive and easily predictable behavior.
Glad to see you guys are liking the game!

Have downloaded the demo several times but still can't get it to run
Will DROD work on Mac OS 10.2.8?

Sorry fella, you need 10.3.0 or higher. It's a limitation of one of the libraries (SDL) that we use in the game.

I agree . . . I think if you could use the arrow keys for movement rather than the numeric keypad it would be much more user friendly . . . |

What gets me is when you skillfully navigate through a whole level, just one creep left between you and the exit, and...AAAaaaaagggghhh...you swing the sword the wrong feckin' way |

But then you might about the diagonal keys, which are necessary for many puzzles. In any event, you can reconfigure the keys however you like from the settings screen.

Hit the backspace key while you are screaming and it undos your death. You have to do it a little quick.

Dude, you got a backspace on there someplace. Unless incompetent elves built your keyboard out of discarded matchbook covers.
But also, you can change the keys in "Settings" and map undo to a different key if you like.
But also also, I'm not going to try too hard to make people like DROD. It's definitely not for everybody.

Why not just let players click the grid at the position they want to move to, and shift click to swing the sword to that position? Much easier |

I don't think you would prefer such an interface after you got further into the game. Clicking on those tiny little 22x22 pixel squares is too slow and error-prone.
