Friday October 2nd, Tournament of Champions for Veterans
Time: all day long
In order to qualify as a Veteran you must have played an online game of Lux on or before October 1st, 2008. So you must have been around longer then 1 year. If you're not a Rookie you qualify.
This TOC will consist of 1-3 rooms (as needed) with only Veterans playing. You can show up anytime during the day and compete.
Scoring is as follows (for each game):
8 points for 1st place
5 points for 2nd place
4 points for 3rd place
3 points for 4th place
2 points for 5th place
1 point for 6th place
Each person's score will be calculated as (total points / games) + (games * 0.2) with a minimum of 3 games required, and a maximum of 10 games. After 10 games you'll stop getting any extra per game.
Only games with 6 humans in it count towards your score.

I think that the minimum number of games should be 5 or 6.
This will reduce the effect of luck and good&bad starts somewhat. |

That's exactly my point. Make it more than just 3 games so you HAVE to continue and play at least 5 for example.

| The minimum number of games required is relatively low to make sure lots of people get a chance to compete. |

| 5 is still relatively low... but it also makes sure the winner isnt some random guy that got lucky for 3 games... |

In order to encourage people to play more then the bare minimum of 3 games, I'm altering the scoring a bit. Instead of the straight-up average, it will be the average + 0.2 per game played.
So the final score for each player will be calculated as (total points / games) + (games * 0.2) with a minimum of 3 games required.
Feedback welcome... |

A person who plays a crazy amount of games would be garenteed a win, then, no? Perhap's a diminishing addition..? (+0.2 for the first, and +0.2/(1+.25x) for each game "x" afterwards..) Then the fourth extra game would only give +.1, the 12th only +.05 , etc.
Just a thought, I find it a bit unfair to give this to the person who spends the most time!
To get an idea of what my formula dictates refer to the following:
A person with 5 extra games will get their average plus 0.8
A person with 10 extra games will get their average plus 1.13
A person with 20 extra games will get their average plus 1.55
A person with 50 extra games will get their average plus 2.19
A person with 100 extra games will get their average plus 2.71

Good point *mani. I think I will simplify your suggestion a little, and go with:
(total points / games) + (games * 0.2) with a minimum of 3 games required, and a maximum of 10 games. After 10 games you'll stop getting any extra per game.
It's actually quite hard to keep a high average in many games, so hopefully this is a balance between playing the min games and pushing for more. |
