October 27th - Tournament of Champions for Top All-Time Seed

Post by dustin » Sat Oct 24, 2009 3:45 am

Tuesday October 27th, Tournament of Champions for Top All-Time Seeds

Early zone starts at 7 PM London UK time / 3 PM Eastern time / noon Pacific.

Late zone starts at 3 AM London UK time / 11 PM Eastern time / 8 PM Pacific.

This TOC will consist of 4 consecutive games played by the 6 highest seeded players who turn up at the starting time. There will be 2 starting times, hopefully each with a few brackets.

To clarify, this is based on the highest you have ever been seeded in your Lux career. Your ranking page will have a "(high of Xth)" beside your seed (unless you're at the highest you've ever been right now), and this lifetime high seed is what is used to enter the tournament. If you have ever been seeded in the top 10 then you should show up and you should be able to play.

Show up on time to play. You can compete in either the early or late zone brackets.

The map will start on Classic. Loser picks the next map. 4 games each.

Scoring is as follows (for each game):
8 points for 1st place
5 points for 2nd place
4 points for 3rd place
3 points for 4th place
2 points for 5th place
1 point for 6th place

The player with the most points in each room will be declared the winner of their TOC.

Dustin, I think you mean for the Early Zone that it will be 8PM London UK time and not 8am!

Hi Dustin, can I confirm something please. You say loser picks the next map. By loser do you mean 6th place player as obviously there are technically 5 losers in each game?

Yes, it's the 6th place player that chooses the next map.

The early edition is supposed to start now, but so far we're short on high-seeded players...

Looks like daylights savings screwed us again!

I'll start another room at 8pm UK time if we get enough high seeds then.

Really enjoyed it, it was great fun, but I did have a bit of luck that helped me win. I should have got 2nd in Rome really and 6th in Afrika. But I'm not going to complain, there is always a bit of luck that comes into play with these things.

Letting the bot win a game was a bit embarassing for us all though :D

Alright. I don't bitch frequently in the forums, but I figure I've got at least one "bitch for free" card and I'm playing it now.

I'm going to try and be constructive about this.

We play for two solid hours on a huge, complicated map with settings actively chosen to prevent killing for cards. 20-something rounds go by in which nobody does anything but farm. Then - there are 10 rounds of solid action, in which I spend most of them beating the crap out of Big Will (apologies, Will, but it was working). I had good position and a small army lead. There were four players alive at that point, each with over 40,000 armies. I sit and fortify up for ONE ROUND and the game gets restarted. After two solid hours - with ABSOLUTELY NO WARNING. A restart had been discussed earlier, but easily fifteen rounds had gone by since that was brought up - and one player was killed in those fifteen rounds. The game was progressing.

I get stuck with two starts on the classic map that have me going last, and nomading. Extremely difficult to win from that position. Anyone who's played a lot will know that you basically need someone else to miss a kill and lay 4 cards at your feet in order to get back in the game. In the second of these games I get halfed TWICE, and ultimately finished off - not for second, mind you, but for third place.

So we can distinguish between me bitching about bad luck and me bitching about holes in the way the tournament was run, let me list the things I'm not bitching about, and chalking up to bad luck/relaxed atmosphere/etc.

1. Getting killed while turtling in the first game for my one card. Someone was about to go to five cards, the game was marathonning - understandable.
2. Getting aced in the Cube Wars game early and in a questionable play. It was probably a bad play, but the person ended up winning and I decidedly did not play that one well.
3. Blatant and deliberate playing for place in the third game that landed me irrevocably in second when there was a chance - slim, perhaps, but a palpable chance - that I could have won.
4. My two bad starts. Were that the only thing that happened, I would easily be able to walk away saying I got screwed - but that happens sometimes in games where chance is a factor.

What I'm here bitching about are people's choices. There were a number of them that really made the room I was in not very fun.

Congrats to Mani for his win. He played well, as usual.

I'm not Dustin :D I didn't restart it lol.

Reading what 3DA wrote it does seem fairly bad form to restart a map even if it was marathoning with out a bit of prior warning. Maybe something along the lines of 'This game will be restarted in 15 rounds if is not over'.

Ok 3DA, i know that some of your criticism is pointed to me, and i totally understand WHY you are bitching about them, if I was in your position, i would be too....Yes, i did play for 3rd in that 3rd game, and did try and kill you in the last, once i was blatantly lined up myself, for 3rd again. But, i do have reasons, and seeing you have started this, I will gladly tell you what my reasons were. In both games, there was a turtle at play, and I was one of 3 peeps who had many more armies......in both games i was last in the card order, therefore, last to cash. In both games, i was lined up to be killed the next shot. Seeing it is a 4 game tourney, and i had gotten a win already, i had a number in my mind of how many points i needed to get a medal, and went for that amount of points......by killing 2 turtles, who, agreed, had bad starts, but hey, im not gonna lose a medal coz someone turtles, when i have got to 250+ armies by workni the board and gettin lucky cashes on 3 a couple of times, but then havin my luck run out......

This kind of practice i have seen EVERY time there is a weekly chase on; it is ugly then, like it was ugly today, but hey, that is what the games are about. You could say, i too, got a hard ride in the castle game when 3 or 4 others ganged up on me coz i was the army leader, and cut me down to nothing...... i was turtlin in cube wars too, and u went and killed me for 6th, when u couldve cut Beetroot's income down THAT shot - i had no income coz u hit me early, i was turtling, and u used your armies to cut me down, when i was no threat to anyone, whilst u let the strongest in the game keep all of his income, and i did not complain, even though i didnt agree with what you were doing.

I agree totally with you that it was likely that you had the castle game won; i had my money on you, you had the army lead by a bit, plus a huge income to boot, but from Dustin's reasoning, it was because you didn't do anything constructrive with your turn, that is why he restarted the game.....

I dont want to argue with you at all, we have words every now and then , but i always make it publicly known that you are one of my most favourite players in all of lux John; i love playin against you and chattin to you, and laughing with you, and yes, i agree that my moves were not of the best ilk, but after 3.5 hours playin 5 games ( well, 4 and a half), there weree always going to be some questionable moves.....do you not remeber how Beetroot plainly played for 2nd in the 1st game, givin me a win, and how Hearts did not attack Beets income in cube wars to give him the game, i mean, that was some intense shit out there today; we had 5 top seeded players of all time, plus a number 2 in myself; the games were always goin to be intense affairs, and because u had 6 good players all playin in 1 room, the games were always goin to be decided by a level of asshattery, as most preliminary moves in the game were made correctly, leavin the games very evenly spread in the initial rounds....leading to semi or full marathons, leading to ugly finishes.....it was always goin to be on the cards.....so, yes, i made some moves that generally would be frowned upon, but have received this treatment myself in many games over luxtober, as im sure many players have over the month of the tournament. A strange thing happens when medals are up for grabs...why do u think so many atheletes risk takin performance enhancing drugs???

Congratulations to Manimal and Lantern, as well as Tserting for winning the respective rooms, thoroughly deserved in a room of madness Manimal, you have come back to lux in the same manner as you left; a ruthless killer of men...well played, I learnt a few things out there today, and yes, a public apology to you 3DA on how my moves made your day that lil worse than it already was....to a point it was bad form, yes, but in a point based tounrey of 4 games, certain tactics are used to gain certain results; wrong on my behalf, perhaps, but i wasnt the only one playin kind of strange; there were many interesting moves and blocks and so forth goin on out there......

Meh, I'm sorry for posting all that crap and gumming up another perfectly good thread. I'm not going to un-post it, because I was legitimately pissed - but, of course, with a little bit of sleep and some perspective I don't give a crap anymore. :smt023

SO - apologies, Mazza, for marring your win. You played well and you actually are an extremely conscientious player. And apologies to y'all reading this thread and being bummed out that someone took the time to spread some more dark shadows. Silly, really.

Alright - I've used my one "bitch in the forums" card for this year. Officially shutting up now. :D

1. Congrats to Manimal, Lantern and Tstering!!!! Good work fellas.

2. Congrats to both 3DA and Mazza for hashing it out in both a logical and friendly manner. I am most impressed with Mazza's self defense and even more impressed with 3DA's genuine acceptance.

Kudo's to all
