Playing games I find myself wanting to check out opponents' stats during play. Switching screens, calling up the rankings page, going back to the search if you're already on a player and then typing in the name takes a bit of time when a game goes generally quickly.

If the player info box could have a hyperlink from each name, it could look up the ranking page for that player directly, just by clicking, and would make quick look-ups easy and intuitive.

This happened to me, too, so I wrote a program to do it for me. Then I wanted to know all the players' raw scores (mmmm, raw) and whether they were seeded (yikes! tough opponent). Then I wanted a way to sum up all the factors that go into choosing a game and automatically rank them all.

Thus was born, LuxOpponentFinder!

It's shareware, (edit)$6. LuxOpponentFinder is now free for everyone until April 5, 2006. Dustin convinced me that I'd get more people using it if it were nag-free. Prove him right!(/edit). Please give me feedback on what you'd like in such a program. Once you've tried it, tell me what sucks about it, too.

I've discussed this a bit with Dustin, and he suggested I post here, so consider this a 'blessed' commercial, as I'm really taking on the burden of providing some of what you want in a companion to Lux.

(edit)
Note: pre-edit, this said: "currently $8 (US) and rising as I add features."
I'm leaving this bit here, since someone quoted me, but it's no longer true.
(/edit)

Nuts. Just play 'em all. Kill them and take their cards. Have fun and relax. That's why I invested my $20 in Lux - not to figure probabilities and worry if I'm going to lose a little raw here and there.

interesting, but not ready for prime time. need to be able to turn off the voice (i often have my computer muted) and provide alternative forms of notification. the menu bar items mess up when resizing: a couple overlap and become unreadable. others, e.g., "bots", "names", no longer respond to clicks (though, to be honest, not sure if they are supposed to or not). some more thought needs to go into how the host/tracker list displays: don't know what some of the information listed means.

the player list needs to be sortable on different categories especially since it appears that every player that has ever played lux online is listed. that means a lot of redundant players there showing, for example, the 200 (?) weighted raw score. the player list disappears when the program is in the background (a feature?). the host list shows a host, but the player list does not (shouldnt they be listed in both?).

finally need some preferences. for example, i want to designate how often it updates, whether it appears or not in the background, and so on.

kudos for the effort and implementation. i think this has a lot of potential and definitely responds to a request by many. i doubt very much i would pay $8.00 for it when it becomes mature enough to pay for (comparing to my other shareware purchases, probably $4 or $5). i definitely would not purchase it. however, further development might convince me otherwise. for now put me in the skeptical column.

missed this first time around .... "and rising"!?! ouch. like gosens said, a hyperlink upgrade here or there in lux 5.3 would cover much of this for me.

I think the types of games you enjoy or don't enjoy playing should be able to be weighted as well.

Cool program, though. Although I wouldn't pay $8 for it.

Definitely needs better table layout and sortable columns in the main window. Hell, i'd settle for column labels Smile

furball, teefal, Kain Mercenary,

Good feedback, all; thank you! Between you, and other conversations recently, I've tripled my to do list! You can expect better versions for the next couple weeks, at least.

For you, and anyone who gives usable feedback like this, I'm giving a discount, up to 50% (furball). Also, I've updated the program a little, and updated my webpage, ReadMe, and ToDo list.

Thank you all,

-eowyn

i doubt that that would be appropriate slayer. i understand that pc users are already way too raw obsessed. we wouldn't want to facilitate this obsession further. (not you of course slayer, those 'other' pc users ...)

Facts: I'm not a Windows programmer. The code is Mac OS X-specific. (Cocoa has lots of things that make programming easy and highly productive, so I used them.)
Feelings: I don't care to rewrite the code. I don't care to learn the Windows APIs.

The feelings may come and go, but the facts remain against it, too, so it's not likely.

Sorry,

While I appreciate being quoted as a partial encouragement to write the program, choosing which game to join is not the reason I made my suggestion. I will join any game and play anyone (provided the people aren't blatantly rude or unsportsmanlike). I'm just interested in the profiles of the people I play against, seeded or not, and not simply their raw score but all the other info on the screen.

I can't comment on the quality of the program as I'm a Windows user anyway, and perhaps people will find value in it, but I'm just setting the record straight about why I suggested having a simple hyperlink.

Could you post a summary of the calculations for a sample full house situation? I am making a spreadsheet (aka manual version) for windows users and I don't think I have the formulas correct yet.

Excellent. Simple, obvious, and necessary, but somehow not on my todo list. Until fixed, you can just edit their number to be zero. That way they won't be treated any differently than anyone else in the computations.

Thank you! You qualify for a discount when registering!

(edit:) web page updated. New version, v0.48, now has a way to delete players. Make sure the popup menu for which players are shown says just "hosts" or "players" or "enemies" (or "friends and enemies"), and click the Delete button (or Cut/Cmd-X).

LuxOpponentFinder is now free until April 5, 2006!

Enjoy!

And please give me feedback on what you like about it (use it for), don't like, and would like to add to it.

Cool, it looks like it has improved a ton!

Quick suggestions:
- make the columns in the tableview sortable by clicking the headers.
- make a big easy to see DOWNLOAD link on the top of the webpage.
- apple-W causes the whole app to quit, instead of closing the front window.

something else:
- apple-comma is the Apple prefered keyboard shortcut for Preferences, and it's also what Lux uses.

Version 0.60 shows the Seed Weights of players who are seeded and has hyper links to player histories and to the host ranking page.
It accounts for the new seedings floor (400 instead of 100).
And it has a slider so you can choose a more 'Fun' view of the game list or a more 'Profit' view. Depending on how you feel about your raw at the moment. (Previously the final score was the plain average of the Fun potential and the Profit potential.)
The info at top of main window (user handle, user raw, user seededness, Unregistered raw, Highest bot (raw), Average bot (raw)) is cleaned up and better presented.
It won't send notifications for games you yourself are in. (It got pretty annoying, after it told me of a friend online, and I joined, that it kept telling me every couple minutes while I was busy playing!)

The apps seems to be really buggy at the moment. It won't work for me like 70% of the time. Is it something I'm doing? It will only refresh once using the refresh button. The friends feature doesn't seem to do anything. I really like the idea of the app but it just seems to not be working properly. When is the next version due out?

I disagree, if you think youre closing a window in another app and ur actually on the opponentfinder it shuts off, i think its more user friendly as it is.

My own suggestion would be to make it free. Its a great app and all, buy why pay for something you could get at the website? Its definately a time saver but i dont think its worth it if we all have to dish out more cash.

Plus, youll get a lot of respect around teh (typo intended) Luxers by throwing freeware (whats that?) into our faces. Smile

has anyone ever had it where LOF will not load any game info?

It gets the ranks and then just hangs at 500.

If I change the profit/fun setting it says

"pruneHostList pruned them all away! 0 hosts to chose from"

any ideas?

I have tried deleting the prefs

i am running osx 10.4.11 on an imac 1.8 G5

it works fine on my office machine which is a dual G5 with 10.4.11
