I just downloaded Lux and it won't even start. No error messages, not windows...nothing. In the console.log the following error occurs:
-[NSJavaVirtualMachine initWithClassPath:] FATAL: cannot initialize ObjCJava. Exit
This is mac os x 10.3.4 on a powerbook G3 with 512 mb of RAM |

This doesn't really help the matter. I, too, have the same problem that Lux won't start. Tell where to look to solve the problem. In fact, I have been unable to play Lux for nearly 6 months. All of my browsers (safari, mozilla, ie) all work with java. |

Here are some things that you can do:
1. Go to Software Update (from the Apple menu, or System Preferences) and check to see if there are any updates with 'java' in them.
2. Open up the Applications/Utilities/Terminal application and type 'java -version' into it. Please post what it says here. |

1. No Java Updates
2.
java version "1.4.2_03"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.2_03-117.1)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.4.2-34, mixed mode) |

OK, your java looks up-to-date. My searches on that error message haven't turned up anything. I sent an email to Apple's java-dev mailing list and maybe that will turn up something.
You say you haven't been able to play Lux for 6 months. I assume this means at one time Lux worked for you? Can you remember any changes to your computer that happened around then? |

| Simple, actually. I ran Apple Software Update and it put in a Java update. I have checked all permissions, and the disk, and all is fine. |

Java reinstalled. No change in the LUX behaviour.
java version "1.4.2_03"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.2_03-117.1)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.4.2-34, mixed mode)
The error:
-[NSJavaVirtualMachine initWithClassPath:] FATAL: cannot initialize ObjCJava. Exit |

Sorry I haven't been able to solve your problem. Can you think of anything else about your computer that might be relevant?
You could try launching Lux from inside the Terminal application. Assuming you have Lux inside your Applications folder you would type:
/Applications/Lux.app/Contents/MacOS/Lux |

Launching from Terminal responds with:
-[NSJavaVirtualMachine initWithClassPath:] FATAL: cannot initialize ObjCJava. Exit
to the terminal window.
I reported this problem about 6 months ago, and there was no solution for it at time either. I sympathize with the original poster, as it is really disapointing. |

I have no problem with any other java programs incloding Acquisition.

I do not have application enhancer, nor iirc.
Why is your java version different than mine. I re-installed the latest Apple Java (1.42) and don't have those numbers. |

I do not use app enhancer nor ircc (whatever that is)
I use the downloads from connect.apple.com the developers connection.
That may account for small differences. We are both using 1.42 java and there have been few changes. |

same problems described above.
java version "1.4.2_03"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.2_03-117.1)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.4.2-34, mixed mode)
standard java 1.4.2 from software update, reinstall yields no change.
have had application installer installed at one time, but has been long un-installed for some time now.
by the way, i believe what kef meant by "iirc" was an abbreviation for "if i recall correctly." so don't worry, you probably never installed it on your computer . |

OK, I downloaded and installed Java 1.42 Update 1 RD3 from ADC, giving me java:
java version "1.4.2_04"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.2_04-135)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.4.2-36, mixed mode)
which is the same version as you. However, starting LUX still results in the same error of:
-[NSJavaVirtualMachine initWithClassPath:] FATAL: cannot initialize ObjCJava. Exit
Did you also install the developper tools for RD3?

I have that same error as I stated when we started.
I do have the developer tools installed also.
I did search for the error via google. I found a number of instantance
errors on other posts.
This is the kind of thing that can happen when the class or framework fails to get loaded. Perhaps we could get a version of Lux with debugging enable. I bet this will show the failure to load the framework. |

SimpleCocoaApp returns:
-[NSJavaVirtualMachine initWithClassPath:] FATAL: cannot initialize ObjCJava. Exit
SimpleCocoaApp2 returns (with username really my short user name on this machine)
Starting NSApplication with params:
-> /Users/username/Documents/Downloads/Scratch/SimpleCocoaJavaApp2.app/Contents/MacOS/SimpleCocoaJavaApp
-> -psn_0_5767169
-[NSJavaVirtualMachine initWithClassPath:] FATAL: cannot initialize ObjCJava. Exit |

SimpleCocoaJavaApp reports in console.log
-[NSJavaVirtualMachine initWithClassPath:] FATAL: cannot initialize ObjCJava. Exit
SimpleCocoaJavaApp2 reports in console.log
Starting NSApplication with params:
-> /Users/lfk/Desktop/SimpleCocoaJavaApp2.app/Contents/MacOS/SimpleCocoaJavaApp
-> -psn_0_13762561
-[NSJavaVirtualMachine initWithClassPath:] FATAL: cannot initialize ObjCJava. Exit
That is all. Nothing else happens with either app |

OK, so it looks as if it is nothing in particular to Lux that is the problem. Cocoa-java programs in general just do not run. Here is the Xcode project for one of the above programs. It is possible that running or debugging the program from within XCode will give some more information about the error.
http://sillysoft.net/download/SimpleCocoaJavaProject.zip (20 k download)
Double click the .xcode file to open the project. Then you can Build/Run/Debug the program from the Build menu or the toolbar. |

No, that should not happen. There should be lots of .class files inside of
/System/Library/Java/com/apple/cocoa/application
and
/System/Library/Java/com/apple/cocoa/foundation
Are there? |

heh.. uhh..
/System/Library/Java/com/ doesn't exist at all
whichs makes me think i might have deleted it, after troubleshooting some java applet issues.
and i would suppose java reinstallation didn't replace them :\
perhaps others have done similar things? |

PROBLEM SOLVED!
w00t!
got a friend to send me his "com" folder,
and i put it in /System/Library/Java/
then all is well
hopefully this solves everyone's problems
you can download the com folder here (zipped) and try it for yourself:
http://ktvoelker.dyndns.org/~insanity/tmp/com.zip
you will have to authenticate when you drag it to /System/Library/Java/
also no guarantees on how long this file will be available |

Adding the com folder did the trick!!!! You will have to authenticate before you can add the com folder to /System/Library/Java. However, the system will tell when to authenticate.
Thanks for solving this one.
