In 1811, William Henry Harrison, Governor of the Indiana Territory, marched on Prophetstown, located at the confluence of the Tippecanoe and Wabash rivers. This settlement, founded by the great Shawnee Chief, Tecumseh, and his brother, Tenskwatawa ("The Prophet"), was a place where several tribes from the area, including the Shawnee, Potawatomi, Delaware, Kickapoo, Wea, Winnebago, and Miami, came to live, work, and commune in peace. Harrison massacred the inhabitants of Prophetstown, destroyed the crops, and burned the village to the ground.
Tecumseh, enraged by this continuing aggression, travelled from Canada to Florida in an attempt to rally a confederacy of Native American tribes to resist the Euro-American "Long Knives" in perhaps their last best attempt to resist the ceaseless encroachment of the euro-american colonial invaders. Eventually, the British entered the fray in the full-blown War of 1812.
Governor Harrison was celebrated as a "war-hero" and later ran a successful presidential campaign under the slogan "Tippecanoe and Tyler, too," which referenced his "victory" at the Battle of Tippecanoe, and his Vice-President, John Tyler. Harrison died of pneumonia only one month after his inauguration, the shortest U.S. Presidency in history.
