California - Gold Rush
version 1.3
rated 3.9 (141 votes)
by Mark Bauer

On January 28, 1848 John Sutter discovered gold at his mill outside of Coloma, California. As news spread of the find, floods of people from all around the world descended upon the sleepy corner of the American west. Covered wagons dotted the landscape as travelers set out on the perilous journey through hostile Indian country, blistering deserts, and ominous mountain passes. Some chose to make the long journey by boat, which brought them to the tiny hamlet of San Francisco. By 1849, San Francisco was a bustling boomtown and the waves of eager adventure seekers continued to push the Native American and Californio populations off their traditional lands. The year is now 1850, and still the thirst for gold has not been quenched. The Californio population of the south is starting to push back, eager to regain the losses suffered during the Mexican-American War. The Northern Indians in the Siskiyou Mountains have formed an alliance, desperate to turn the tide and hold on to what is rightfully theirs. Is it too late? Will California be overrun by "forty-niners?" Or will the rush for gold be stopped in its tracks?

Earth has landed and has created platforms and has taken over Cluster's land, forcing Cluster to take over Phrapiazus and most of Tollaen. War Zone - China
version 1.1
rated 3.9 (122 votes)
by RandomGuy

Inspired by Mark Bauer's U.S.A. War Zone map!

WAR ZONE - China:

2057. For 50 years, China has grown at an exponential rate in technology, industry and military might. Allowed to go unchecked, China has developed next-generation weapons capable of destroying any nation on Earth. They have surpassed the United States and become the world's sole "superpower".

With this new power, China begins wielding their influence throughout the world. They spread communism in the third world. They prop up foreign governments. And when they openly topple a few democratic nations to replace them with Chinese sympathizers, the remaining world democracies had had enough.

The president of the United States, George Bush III, decides to invade! He then looks for support, and finds it from China's neighbors, Russia to the North and India to the South. And against common wisdom, the U.S. begins a full scale land war in Asia.

The First U.S. Division, based out of the Phillipines, attacks the Southeast, targetting Hong Kong and Taiwan (reclaimed by the Chinese military in 2016). The Second Division, operating out of South Korea, attacks from the Northeast. The Indian Army focuses on capturing Tibet, while the Russian Federation Army moves in across Mongolia in the north.

Will the invading forces win, or will China hold firm? It is WAR ZONE: China!

Game notes:
- Rivers can only be crossed where marked by a bridge.
- The Great Wall of China can not be crossed.
- Cities marked with a pagoda icon provide reinforcement armies. The larger the icon, the larger the bonus.
- The two US divisions are linked by a US Navy fleet. The fleet has no income bonus.

Update history:
v1.1: adjusts U.S. Army II 101st Airborne to directly attack Shanghai to provide greater income potential.

West Virginia - Civil War
version 1.0
rated 3.9 (115 votes)
by Mark Bauer

The year is 1861; the assault on Fort Sumter has caused President Lincoln to call for volunteers to put down the southern insurrection. In the wake of this action the Virginia legislator voted to secede from the Union and take up arms against the invading Union army. However, not all Virginians sympathized with the rebel cause. The western mountain counties of Virginia convened at Wheeling and decided to secede from their own state and remain loyal to the union. This has been a disastrous blow to the moral and strategic situation of the newly formed Confederate States of America. The vital railways that link the eastern and western theatres run directly through West Virginia. These railways are essential to moving men and material to the battlefield. George B McClellan has realized this and quickly set out to secure the Baltimore & Ohio (B&O) Railroad. His surprise victory at Philippi has given the "Young Napoleon" a strong advantage. But the Rebels aren't giving up so easily. A new confederate general is on the scene, Robert E. Lee, and he's ready to reverse the losses and return West Virginia into the hands of the Confederacy. In no other part of the country was the old adage "Brother vs. Brother" truer than in West Virginia. The struggle has just begun!

Mesoamerican Battles
version 1.1
rated 3.9 (104 votes)
by Neil Melville

Mesoamerican Battles - 942 wide by 600 high

108 countries (50 mile hexes) - 14 Continents - 11 Cities

The ancient tribes of Mesoamerica: Olmec, Totonac, Zapotec, Mixtec, Aztec, and Maya.
In this land, the tribal city states clash one with another, each seeking to establish theocratic supremacy. They build alliances, and temples with sacifical altars, praying to their gods for success in battle.

Each principal city state adds to the strength of your armies. The city states in regions bordering the principal cities provide support for your armies. The mountainous terrain is sometimes impassable, but you can use this to your advantage.

SIEGE OF TYRE
version 0.98
rated 3.9 (87 votes)
by Behemoth

It is 332 BC and Alexander III of Macedon has entrenched his armies well beyond the shores of Greece. With Babylon now in reach it angers him that the port city Tyre remains defiant. Little wonder, its watery perch is some 900 yards from land, rimmed by 150-foot high walls. It is a sea-locked garrison seemingly impervious to assault.

Professing to have had visions of victory at Tyre Alexander announces he will take the city, a move not widely applauded. Indeed, his plan is so ambitious it verges on the absurd. He proposes to bring the land to Tyre.

The undertaking is immense, not only must his army build a mole across sea to the very walls of Tyre, but it's steep fortification demands use of giant siege engines, a size never before built.

The Tyrians are amused by the Macedonian’s labor - surely this army’s commander must be insane. They besiege the mole and dispatch fire ships to torch the half-built siege engines.

But Alexander is relentless. Days become weeks, weeks months and as the land edges closer to the city and new siege engines are unveiled the magnitude of his vision becomes all too real.

North Carolina - Tuscarora War
version 1.6
rated 3.9 (82 votes)
by Mark Bauer

The year is 1711, for decades the European colonists have lived in relative peace with their native neighbors. However more and more colonists arrive everyday, straining the already tense situation. The most powerful tribe in the region is the Tuscarora tribe. The Upper faction of the tribe, led by Chief Blunt, wants closer relations with the mysterious newcomers. The lower faction, led by Chief Hancock, is bearing the brunt of European encroachment and wants to fight back. Unable to reach a comprise, Chief Hancock and an alliance of southern tribes have begun raiding settler villages all across southern North Carolina in an attempt to stem the tide of the white eye. Governor Hyde wastes no time in organizing a militia and seizing the opportunity to finally eradicate the savage Indians!

Rules:
--Similar to "Arms Race" by RandomGuy

Manatus

rated 3.9 (65 votes)
by Lupus ferox

Manatus, gelegen op de Noot riuier, 1639
Manhattan, situated on the North river, 1639

This 1639 map is the earliest portrayal of Manhattan and its environs. The map may have been drawn by Johannes Vingboons, cartographer to the Prince of Nassau for the West India Company of Holland. This map, possibly done to encourage Dutch settlement, depicts plantations and small farms. The list of references includes a grist mill, two sawmills and "Quarters of the Blacks, the Company's Slaves." See http://www.loc.gov/exhibits/treasures/trm068.html

For Lux I rearranged things a bit, to make it a playable map. The names of the territories are also from the 1639 map, but the text was difficult to read, and could have been misinterpreted in some cases.

The Picture on the bottom is also from Johannes Vingboons, but from 1665, showing Nieuw Amsterdam from the south.

For more information about the early history of New York see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Amsterdam

Japan Sengoku Jidai
version 1.02
rated 3.8 (145 votes)
by Kartofile

Japan's "Sengoku Jidai" (Era of the Warring States) lasted from 1467 to 1603. It began when the ruling Shogun failed to avert a civil war and then chose to ignore it, preferring to slip into irrelevance (albeit with breathtaking artistic refinement) rather than deal with the situation. The resulting power vacuum served only to inflame the conflict, which eventually dragged on for well over a century before anyone was able to sort it all out.

Hopefully it won't take you quite that long.

However, the map is rather maze-like and it may take a while to get used to. The biggest challenge is navigating through the complex geography of islands, mountains and water. Be sure to play the map at its full size, with army graphics off, and make good use of the Bonuses button to familiarize yourself with the old Japanese "continents." Random startup is more fun (and more historically accurate) than the startup situation.

This is my first public map, so any tips for making it better would definitely be appreciated. Comments can be posted in the online forum at sillysoft.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=7971 ... Hope you like it!

Middle-East War
version 1.2
rated 3.8 (130 votes)
by Wizz

This is one the first maps I've drawn, but never released... I decided to redraw it. I hope you enjoy it. It is still lots of fun yet. The scenario is a bit basic, with every player getting a 10 armies load on a territory which I think is well placed to decided on what strategy, or what direction the Luxer will choose to go to... Have a little Middle-East War !

Punic Wars
version 1.3
rated 3.8 (123 votes)
by SunTzu

PUNIC WARS: 6 Cities, 60 Territories, 13 Continents

The Punic Wars between Rome and Carthage effectively decided the struggle for mastery of the Mediterranean world. Before the first war, Rome was still a purely Italian power; after the last, her writ effectively ran from the Levant to Spain and from the Alps to Tunisia.

DETAILS
The 13 continents range from having 1-9 territories and are worth from 1-9 bonus points. The bonus points are dependent upon the number of territories and the number of borders they have with other continents.

The 6 cities (Rome, Carthage, Syracuse, Athens, Byzantium, and Cartagena) are each worth 3 bonus points

SUGGESTIONS
This map looks best with thin borders. Simply go to the preferences menu and drag the slider all the way to the left. Red borders have been added to the map to help differentiate between continents.

Cube Wars
version 1.4
rated 3.8 (121 votes)
by SunTzu

CUBE WARS: 180 Countries, 30 Continents

After being inspired by Preacherman's sermon on the Lincolnesque properties of Hex maps, I've decided to create one myself. The 30 most influential posters on the sillysoft forums (i.e. spammers) each get their own cubicle. Each cube rat gets their own chair, desk, telephone, and computer. Posters that have profoundly offered words of wisdom in the forums (i.e. spammed the most) also have a few personal accessories that decorate their cubicle.

Kings & Castles - Scotland

2 Bridges - The two bridges within the corn fields award a NEGITIVE bonus.

10 Burning Crop Fields - These crops are worthless due to fire and sabotage. All the burned crops award a NEGITIVE bonus. The more you conquer the more armies you will burn. Is it worth it to grab that extra card?

And YEA!

Russo-Japanese War
version 1.1
rated 3.8 (118 votes)
by SunTzu

RUSSO-JAPANESE WAR: 6 Continents, 26 territories, 17 cities

The Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905) was fought between the Russian and Japanese Empires for control of Korea and Manchuria. After a breakdown in diplomatic negotiations, the Japanese sent Russia an ultimatum: give Manchuria to Japan or prepare for war. A mere three hours before the Russian government received the ultimatum, Japan attacked Port Arthur.

DETAILS
The map itself is very similiar to classic, but the cities and railroads add a very dynamic twist. This map is conducive to both slow, strategic build-ups as well as open, fass-paced games.

Remember, the railroads connect the cities!

SCENARIO
Russia is the powerhouse on this map. They control Russia and most part of Manchuria, including the two key railways: the Trans-Siberian railroad (which includes the southern Manchurian route) and the Manchurian railroad. They also hold Port Arthur, their key warm water port.

Although Japan won the real war, in terms of geography, manpower, and resources they were the underdogs. The acquisition of Korea and Port Arthur are of the utmost priority.

China is almost a non-issue on this map, but if they get involved it can swing the war either way. For a real challenge, try to win this map for the glory of the Chinese Empire!

Special thanks to Hephaistion for suggesting this map, and to MBauer for key gameplay ideas.

Europe Large

Version 1.2: Totally redid the graphics (you should now be able to see the terrain!) and resized the map according to popular request to 1024 wide. You can still see the territories, and it sure is nice to have to scroll less! Version 1.1: Fixed a few "missing links" and added a connection to the Baleares. Version 1.0:This is a huge map, comparable to the region maps released in the 1996 version of Risk. However, this map has corrected many of the errors and peculiar connections (Galicia to Ireland anyone?) that were found on that version of Europe. In addition, I utilyzed the Europe Universalis II map of Europe in placing the territories, and anyone familiar with that game will note the numerous similarities. This map has been extensively tested with the AI. Yacool does the best, with Quo and EvilPixie next. I recommence Yacool and EvilPixie for single player, as they have the annoying tendency to break through your lines and wreak havoc if you are too strong. Quo usually wins by waiting as the other players exhaust their resources... The map has 17 continents and 219 territories. Enjoy! If anybody finds an error with the map, let me know, and I'll fix it.

mapLAB update: Added a starting scenario, moved PI window.

The screen actor's guild mobilizes and quickly becomes an ominous and powerful force bent on finding the perfect gig. Los Angeles is soon under the thumb of the oppressive SAG army and violence spreads throughout the state. The rest of the state splinters into alliances as Nevadans, sick of their state being used as a test ground, see this as an opportunity to secure a new homeland. Since the end of the Indian War with France both New York and New Hampshire laid claim to the region west of the Connecticut River. New York, a very powerful province, was given rights to the area by King George III. However, New Hampshire did not listen and issued a series of land grants to native residents in order to encourage further settlement. These residents formed what became known as the "Green Mountain Boys," a paramilitary militia who were fierce in the defense of their homeland and used whatever means necessary to drive off their enemy. New York issued warrants for the arrest of their leader, Ethan Allen, declaring him an outlaw and an enemy of the state. Without the support of New Hampshire, Ethan Allen and his followers began to want a country of their own, free from all. By 1775 the Green Mountain boys had successfully secured most of the region and were situated on the outskirts of Albany when fate came knocking, the American Revolution had begun! Now, the Green Mountain boys are forced to join forces with their New York rivals in order to fight their common enemy, the British. With a large force along Lake Champlain, the redcoats are gearing up for a massive invasion of the belligerent colonies. The only thing in their way is the valiant and determined Green Mountain Boys, who are ready to fight and die for their country. For freedom and unity!

Scenario set-up (Random start off):
Player 1: Green Mountain Boys
Player 2: New York

In 431 BC the Peloponnesian League, led by Sparta launched repeated invasions of Attica, while Athens took advantage of its naval supremacy to raid the coast of the Peloponnese attempting to suppress signs of unrest in its empire. After 27 years of battle the Athenians, deprived of their naval supremacy with the destruction of the entire force, surrender and was reduced to a state of near-complete subjection, while Sparta was established as the leading power of Greece. The economic costs of the war were felt all across Greece; poverty became widespread in the Peloponnese, while Athens found itself completely devastated, and never regained its pre-war prosperity. The war also wrought subtler changes to Greek society; the conflict between Democratic Athens and oligarchic Sparta, each of which supported friendly political factions within other states, made civil war a common occurrence in the Greek world. The Peloponnesian War marked the dramatic end to the fifth-century-B.C. golden age of Greece.

by Mark Bauer

It is the late 1800s, the American frontier is quickly closing and with it, usable land for cattle driving. The large ranchers of Cheyenne are pushing out the small homesteaders that once called the open range their home. After a disastrous winter and severe drought, thousands of cattle were lost. The large ranching outfits began to aggressively appropriate land and control the flow of water. As tensions between the large and small cattle handlers increased, so did rustling (cattle stealing). Enraged, the large ranching companies began to lynch and burn anyone suspected of rustling. But this did not have the desired effect, the small ranchers banded together, ready to fight. In response, the large ranchers hired desperados and gunslingers from Texas to invade Johnson County, the homesteaders' stronghold. The homesteaders quickly fought back and cornered the invasion force at the TA ranch. Now, the situation for both sides is desperate, and the stakes are high. Governor Barber has requested assistance from the US military and the famed Buffalo soldiers. The frontier is burning! It's time to immortalize your name for this, is the Wild West!

Europe Large 4--The Great War
version 1.1
rated 3.8 (66 votes)
by Max Keve

Based on Europe Large, this map is based on the military situation one month after the assassination of Archduke Francis Ferdinand, heir to the thrown of Austria-Hungary. Ferdinand was killed by Serbian nationalist Gavrilo Princip on June 7, 1914, and now the Austro-Hungarian Empire has issued an ultimatum to Serbia, surrender or prepare for war.
However, Russia had other plans. The Russians had signed a defensive alliance with the Serbians which they were ready to honor. They began to mobilize their large reserve army, as well as prepare the standing armies on the border for battle.
Austria-Hungary, now faced with the threat of Russia's enormous army, nicknamed "the steamroller", called on their own ally, Germany, to help them. The German's declared war against Russia and began to prepare. But the escalation wasn't finished yet.
The French would not miss a chance to seek revenge on their German rivals, and entered the war. Germany, now faced with a two front war needed a plan. They tried to quickly crush France with an early strike, then move troops to the Russian front to halt "the steamroller". The Germans attacked France, but had to crush neutral Belgium to do so.
This violation of Belgium's neutrality brought the British, who had been spoiling to knock Germany down a knotch for a decade, into the war. Now this was a World War, and the stage was set for a dramatic fight. Can the German's overwhelm the French before British forces arrive to assist them? Will the massive Russian army rally, or can the Austro-Hungarians, and Germans hold their own in the East. What will the unalligned countries, the Italians, Spanish, Scandanavians, Balkan Countries and the Ottoman Empire do?

The thin white lines over water denote a two-way connection between territories, while the thicker white arrow denotes a one-way connection. The British Royal Navy dominates the North Sea, so the allies are allowed to invade Norway, but they cannot be invaded by that route.

Team 1: Central Powers (Germany and Austria-Hungary)
Team 2: Russia (and Serbia)
Team 3: Allies (Britain, France, Portugal, and Greece)
Team 4: Unalligned Countries (Spain, Norway, Sweden, Italy, and the Balkan States.
Team 5: Ottoman Empire
Team 6 (Empty): Neutral nations (Holland, and Switzerland)

Thanks to Daniel Myers, author of the "Europe Large" maps that this is built off of. The 3 maps are really fun, and I recommend them to everyone.

Falklands War
version 0.3
rated 3.8 (61 votes)
by Curran919

On April 2, 1982 Argentinian Forces claimed sovereignty and invaded the virtually undefended British Colonies: The Falkland Islands and South Georgia, both in the South Atlantic.

With little infrastructure on the Island, the 74-day war was fought mainly at sea. The limited amount of airstrips on the islands could not support fast aircraft but proved to be a hot commodity regardless.

This 2-player map pits the Argentinian Juntas against the British Armed Forces. Dotted lines are partitions, not lines of attack. Airstrips can attack eachother and all surrounding countries. Countries and Ships can only attack eachother where arrows are present.
