 | Manatus version 1.05 rated 3.8 (82 votes) by Lupus ferox | Manatus, gelegen op de Noot riuier, 1639
Manhattan, situated on the North river, 1639
This 1639 map is the earliest portrayal of Manhattan and its environs. The map may have been drawn by Johannes Vingboons, cartographer to the Prince of Nassau for the West India Company of Holland. This map, possibly done to encourage Dutch settlement, depicts plantations and small farms. The list of references includes a grist mill, two sawmills and "Quarters of the Blacks, the Company's Slaves." See http://www.loc.gov/exhibits/treasures/trm068.html
For Lux I rearranged things a bit, to make it a playable map. The names of the territories are also from the 1639 map, but the text was difficult to read, and could have been misinterpreted in some cases.
The Picture on the bottom is also from Johannes Vingboons, but from 1665, showing Nieuw Amsterdam from the south.
For more information about the early history of New York see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Amsterdam

 | Vermont - Independence version 1.1 rated 3.8 (82 votes) by Mark Bauer | Since the end of the Indian War with France both New York and New Hampshire laid claim to the region west of the Connecticut River. New York, a very powerful province, was given rights to the area by King George III. However, New Hampshire did not listen and issued a series of land grants to native residents in order to encourage further settlement. These residents formed what became known as the "Green Mountain Boys," a paramilitary militia who were fierce in the defense of their homeland and used whatever means necessary to drive off their enemy. New York issued warrants for the arrest of their leader, Ethan Allen, declaring him an outlaw and an enemy of the state. Without the support of New Hampshire, Ethan Allen and his followers began to want a country of their own, free from all. By 1775 the Green Mountain boys had successfully secured most of the region and were situated on the outskirts of Albany when fate came knocking, the American Revolution had begun! Now, the Green Mountain boys are forced to join forces with their New York rivals in order to fight their common enemy, the British. With a large force along Lake Champlain, the redcoats are gearing up for a massive invasion of the belligerent colonies. The only thing in their way is the valiant and determined Green Mountain Boys, who are ready to fight and die for their country. For freedom and unity!
Scenario set-up (Random start off):
Player 1: Green Mountain Boys
Player 2: New York
Player 3: New Hampshire
Player 4: British
*Fun fact- Vermont is one of only 4 US states to have formerly been an independent nation. |

 | Okinawa 1945 version 1.0 rated 3.8 (81 votes) by Kartofile | The Battle of Okinawa (March-June 1945) was the last major battle of WWII and the largest sea-land-air battle in history. It took Allied forces three months to secure the 60-mile long island, during which 1/4 million people died in a hellish landscape of greasy mud and rotting corpses. Many historians believe it was this horrific battle that convinced US leaders to force Japan's surrender with a nuclear strike rather than invade its main islands.
The map includes a two-player starting scenario which simulates the situation shortly after the battle began: US forces have landed and established control over central Okinawa, isolating the Japanese at the northern and southern ends of the island. You take it from there.
In real life, US troops swept through the sparsely populated northern areas within a few weeks, but it took months of nightmarish fighting to capture the southern part of the island. Tragically, Japanese propaganda had convinced many islanders that the invading Americans would commit genocide and other atrocities; this deception led to many extreme acts of civilian resistance including mass suicides. Postwar US occupation of Okinawa lasted nearly three decades (until 1972) and even today this small island remains home to a large American military presence.
The map is best played at its full size (985 x 567) with army graphics turned off. Continents may be more easily defended than they appear, as each one has just four border territories.
If you can tell me how to make this map better, please post a note in the Map LAB forum. Thanks! |

 | Texas version 1.0 rated 3.8 (80 votes) by Evan Williams | This is a map of the present-day state of Texas, with 95 "counties" (simplified and redrawn from the 254 rather grid-like counties of real Texas; gameplay is more important than accuracy) and 25 metropolitan areas. Full control of a metropolitan area is worth bonus points equal to the number of "counties" in it: this ranges from 1 to 6. Note that the eastern part of the map is more valuable than the west, being more urban.
Even with the reduced number of counties, the map is somewhat cluttered; you may wish to turn off "Show army graphics" in your preferences. Besides, any war fought over modern Texas would more likely be metaphorical--a war of culture, ideas, or market share--than physical. |

 | Europe Large 4--The Great War version 1.1 rated 3.8 (79 votes) by Max Keve | Based on Europe Large, this map is based on the military situation one month after the assassination of Archduke Francis Ferdinand, heir to the thrown of Austria-Hungary. Ferdinand was killed by Serbian nationalist Gavrilo Princip on June 7, 1914, and now the Austro-Hungarian Empire has issued an ultimatum to Serbia, surrender or prepare for war.
However, Russia had other plans. The Russians had signed a defensive alliance with the Serbians which they were ready to honor. They began to mobilize their large reserve army, as well as prepare the standing armies on the border for battle.
Austria-Hungary, now faced with the threat of Russia's enormous army, nicknamed "the steamroller", called on their own ally, Germany, to help them. The German's declared war against Russia and began to prepare. But the escalation wasn't finished yet.
The French would not miss a chance to seek revenge on their German rivals, and entered the war. Germany, now faced with a two front war needed a plan. They tried to quickly crush France with an early strike, then move troops to the Russian front to halt "the steamroller". The Germans attacked France, but had to crush neutral Belgium to do so.
This violation of Belgium's neutrality brought the British, who had been spoiling to knock Germany down a knotch for a decade, into the war. Now this was a World War, and the stage was set for a dramatic fight. Can the German's overwhelm the French before British forces arrive to assist them? Will the massive Russian army rally, or can the Austro-Hungarians, and Germans hold their own in the East. What will the unalligned countries, the Italians, Spanish, Scandanavians, Balkan Countries and the Ottoman Empire do?
The thin white lines over water denote a two-way connection between territories, while the thicker white arrow denotes a one-way connection. The British Royal Navy dominates the North Sea, so the allies are allowed to invade Norway, but they cannot be invaded by that route.
Team 1: Central Powers (Germany and Austria-Hungary)
Team 2: Russia (and Serbia)
Team 3: Allies (Britain, France, Portugal, and Greece)
Team 4: Unalligned Countries (Spain, Norway, Sweden, Italy, and the Balkan States.
Team 5: Ottoman Empire
Team 6 (Empty): Neutral nations (Holland, and Switzerland)
Thanks to Daniel Myers, author of the "Europe Large" maps that this is built off of. The 3 maps are really fun, and I recommend them to everyone. |

 | Wyoming - Cattle Wars version 1.3 rated 3.8 (73 votes) by Mark Bauer | It is the late 1800s, the American frontier is quickly closing and with it, usable land for cattle driving. The large ranchers of Cheyenne are pushing out the small homesteaders that once called the open range their home. After a disastrous winter and severe drought, thousands of cattle were lost. The large ranching outfits began to aggressively appropriate land and control the flow of water. As tensions between the large and small cattle handlers increased, so did rustling (cattle stealing). Enraged, the large ranching companies began to lynch and burn anyone suspected of rustling. But this did not have the desired effect, the small ranchers banded together, ready to fight. In response, the large ranchers hired desperados and gunslingers from Texas to invade Johnson County, the homesteaders' stronghold. The homesteaders quickly fought back and cornered the invasion force at the TA ranch. Now, the situation for both sides is desperate, and the stakes are high. Governor Barber has requested assistance from the US military and the famed Buffalo soldiers. The frontier is burning! It's time to immortalize your name for this, is the Wild West!
*Rules: Any area touching a fort can attack that fort.

 | Falklands War version 0.3 rated 3.8 (69 votes) by Curran919 | On April 2, 1982 Argentinian Forces claimed sovereignty and invaded the virtually undefended British Colonies: The Falkland Islands and South Georgia, both in the South Atlantic.
With little infrastructure on the Island, the 74-day war was fought mainly at sea. The limited amount of airstrips on the islands could not support fast aircraft but proved to be a hot commodity regardless.
This 2-player map pits the Argentinian Juntas against the British Armed Forces. Dotted lines are partitions, not lines of attack. Airstrips can attack eachother and all surrounding countries. Countries and Ships can only attack eachother where arrows are present. |

 | Russo-Japanese War version 1.1 rated 3.7 (124 votes) by SunTzu | RUSSO-JAPANESE WAR: 6 Continents, 26 territories, 17 cities
The Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905) was fought between the Russian and Japanese Empires for control of Korea and Manchuria. After a breakdown in diplomatic negotiations, the Japanese sent Russia an ultimatum: give Manchuria to Japan or prepare for war. A mere three hours before the Russian government received the ultimatum, Japan attacked Port Arthur.
DETAILS
The map itself is very similiar to classic, but the cities and railroads add a very dynamic twist. This map is conducive to both slow, strategic build-ups as well as open, fass-paced games.
Remember, the railroads connect the cities!
SCENARIO
Russia is the powerhouse on this map. They control Russia and most part of Manchuria, including the two key railways: the Trans-Siberian railroad (which includes the southern Manchurian route) and the Manchurian railroad. They also hold Port Arthur, their key warm water port.
Although Japan won the real war, in terms of geography, manpower, and resources they were the underdogs. The acquisition of Korea and Port Arthur are of the utmost priority.
China is almost a non-issue on this map, but if they get involved it can swing the war either way. For a real challenge, try to win this map for the glory of the Chinese Empire!
Special thanks to Hephaistion for suggesting this map, and to MBauer for key gameplay ideas. |

 | Battle of the Little Bighorn version 1.1 rated 3.7 (114 votes) by Bob McCartney (BarStar) | The Battle of the Little Bighorn - which is also called Custer's Last Stand - was an armed engagement between the Lakota-Northern Cheyenne and the 7th Cavalry of the United States Army. It occurred June 26, 1876, near the Little Bighorn River in what is now Montana. The battle was the most famous battle in the Indian Wars and was a remarkable victory for the Indian Nations.
Forces from the Army led by Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer, were sent to attack the thousands of Native Indians that had slipped away from their reservations to join forces with Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse. The United States Army planned a three-pronged plan to corral them and force them back to the reservations.
Custer's main forces began their assault from an overlook 14 miles east of the Little Bighorn River. Major Marcus Reno was instructed to lead his battalion from the South and attack and pursue the Indians from the village and to bring them into the main battle.
To the surprise of Reno, the Lakota-Northern Cheyenne were present in force and not running away. Reno ordered a retreat to nearby woods, and then made a disorderly withdrawal to the river and up to the top of the bluffs and joined forces with a battalion commanded by Captain Frederick Benteen.
Having driven Reno's force into complete chaos, the Indian warriors were free to turn their attention on Custer. Benteen did not continue on towards Custer for at least an hour, despite hearing heavy gunfire from the north where General Custer on horseback and his U. S. Army troops made their last charge at the Battle of the Little Bighorn. Custer's 210 men engaged the Lakota-Northern Cheyenne (or had been engaged by them) to the north and were killed to the very last man.

 | First Macedonian Wars version 2.3 rated 3.7 (111 votes) by Lebowski | First Macedonian War (211-205 BC)
Concocted by both the greed of of the war-profiteering Roman Magistrates and the mounting desire to retaliate for Philip of Macedonia's alliance with Hannibal, the Macedonian Wars were the first of a series of unpopular campaigns started with the intention of staving off Hannibal and his forces from the boarders of Rome.
The Romans were clearly not interested in aquiring any permanant property, but were in desperate need of allies to do their biddings. In 211 BC the Romans formed an alliance with the Aetolians, old enemies of Philip's. In 209 BC Rome was joined by Attalus of Pergamum in their effort to destroy Philip, great-grandfather of Alexander the Great.
In 207 Philip invaded Aetolia, but the Romans did little to help. Were the gods looking favorably upon Philip finally? Would Rome prove too powerful for Philip while holding all the strings over their league of puppet forces? Perhaps you should decide the matter...

 | Maine - 1812 version 1.1 rated 3.7 (78 votes) by Mark Bauer | Rules:
-Land and water territories only connect at cities and forts.
Story:
The year is 1812, it's been over 20 years since the American Revolution, but still Britain persists in treating the new republic as subjects of the Crown. The United States has finally had enough and declares war on the Maritime powerhouse. Seeing this as their chance to finally re-take the new continent, Britain acts quickly in bringing a stranglehold on America by setting up a blockade along the entire New England coast. Hardest hit is the small Massachusetts colony of Maine, whom deeply depends on access to the sea. Now British forces are invading this small colony, determined to form the province of "New Ireland." Meanwhile, the powerful American warship USS Constitution is headed North in a desperate attempt to bring relief to the beleaguered colony. It's time to show the British that the Revolution was indeed permanent!

 | Europe Large 2--The Thirty Years War version 1.1 rated 3.7 (75 votes) by Daniel Myers | Edited--The download should work now; I did not realize that ":" in the title caused a problem.
Based on the Europe Large map, this map alters the continents for much better balance, and to reflect the situation during the Thirty Years War. I made sure that the continents were worth an appropriate amount for their relative influence during that war, and separated Germany in two to reflect the religious split. I essentially lowered the continent values across the board, according to a new formula. This map has many, many places to start with a chance at winning, rather than the four or so in Europe Large original. I have extensively tested this map with the AI, and according to my records, Cluster, EvilPixie, Quo, and Yakool have performed the best in AI-only matches. I suspect, however, that EvilPixie will provide the best single-player challenge.
Version 1.1: New scenario added. The powers are the Ottoman Empire, the Hapsburgs of Spain and Austria, the French, the Empire of all Russias, the Swedish/Danish/North German Protestant Alliance, and the Anglo-Dutch alliance. The Ottomans are the strongest, and it may take diplomacy to shoot them down. Their army is not the strongest, but their economy is mighty (they get a lot of reinforcements.) They win nearly half the games. Spain/Austria is also powerful, and probably has the most troops. However, their position is weak, in that they have two power bases. They need to try to connect them; hence their eyes turn on France. France is surrounded by enemies, but is strong militarily. It will be hard to win from their position...but they did in real life, under the leadership of Cardinal Richeleau. They must make alliances to survive, as their borders are long and hard to defend. The Russians were not yet as powerful as they would be later, and were a backward nation. But they were big, and their army is fairly large. Also, they are protected to the North and East. They have a solid strategic position, but they must watch for their mighty southern neighbors. The Anglo/Dutch alliance is not very strong in armies, but also does not have very many borders to defend. An alliance of the English and the Swedish could yield excellent results. The Swedish, Danish, and North German alliance is vulnerable, but militarily strong. Their borders are long. They have a difficult position, and cannot afford to fight all of their neighbors at once.
As you can see, this map is made for diplomacy. Enjoy! |

 | Shangor Gate version 1.2 rated 3.7 (71 votes) by Jeff McKinney | Shangor Gate is an epic battle of good and evil. The continent of Shangor Gate is ruled by a theocracy called the Shangor Knights. The Knights, a religous sect steeped in historical roots 2500 years old, has rule over Shangor Gate and East Nobolio and is seeking to expand it's kindom of god. The Shangor Knights have begun to move into West Nobolio and are threatening the country of Trakkar.
The Rastagor Hoard are the ogre's that live in Rastagor Plains. and Quigley. The ogre's are barbarians that live to conquer and kill, ever searching for more land to plunder. They have begun to move orge armies into Ulstetter to drive into Trakkar and ultimately into Shangor Gate. The Rastagor Hoard hate all things Shangor.
Trakkar is a continent caught in between the raiding Rastagor Hoard and the religous zealots of Shangor. The government of Trakkar wants to keep it's thriving democracy alive and is willing to fight and die to defend it. Trakkar has expanded it's territory into West Nobolio and Ulsetter in attempts to head off attacks from Shangor and the Rastagor Hoard.
Can you save Trakkar from being overrun by the religous zealots and the advancing barbarians? |

 | Otago Harbour version 1.3 rated 3.7 (69 votes) by Brad Peckham | Hold onto Otago Harbour for the most armies and a chance to attack past Port Chalmers and down into the heart of the city of Dunedin. Dunedin itself also grants many armies, but it is large and sprawling, making it tough to control. Mt. Gregory to the north can provide a good alternate base.
The scenerio simulates a sea force landing against well entrenched land forces in a fight for supremacy. |

 | Dark Battle version 1.4 rated 3.7 (66 votes) by Liquidfire | Inspired by Space Empire in that it is a big hex map with clear connections and minus continents on chokepoints.
I made this map with many good starting continents, and it is a good map for the fast advancer. |

 | Europe Huge version 1.1 rated 3.7 (66 votes) by Thomas | 238 countries, 23 continents.
Good luck!

 | MARATHON version 1.1 rated 3.7 (65 votes) by Behemoth | It is 490 BC and King Darius 1st of Persia has finally crushed the rebellion against his empire. Now his gaze falls on Greece. For six long years this rabble has aided the usurpers and even now remains defiant. A show of power is in order he thinks, both to rid his court of lingering dissent and to ensure no Greek dares question Persia again. Darius dispatches his armies - their mission: to turn Greek cites to dust, to slay all who raise sword or shield against his will and to enslave the rest. This will be Darius's subjugation of Greece.
It is September and Darius's fleet land on a beach near the city of Marathon. If the army’s size wasn't cause for alarm the trail of destruction in its wake surely was, having already turned the Aegean Sea red and raised Eritrea. Athens, aided by a small force of Plataeans march to meet the invaders on the Plain of Marathon, blocking passages to Boatia and Athens. But the Persians are in no rush and the Athenian roadblock remains unchallenged. For days these 10,000 Greeks endure a stalemate, facing an enemy well over twice their number, an imbalance they hope the arrival of Spartans will help address. But that day never comes.
Grossly outnumbered, devoid of cavalry and possessing but a fraction of the enemy’s missile troops, inexplicably the Greeks decide to attack. The invaders are surprised to say the least, not only that a Greek offensive was ordered, but that as Persian bows fill the air the Athenians break into a sprint, a move no Greek army had used until that day. Surprise turns to horror as Athenian phalanxes tear into the Persian front line, and with the clamor of that maddened impact so begins the Battle of Marathon.

 | War of the Five Kings version 1.1 rated 3.7 (65 votes) by Baudolino | The War of the Five Kings has begun!
Lead one of the five great houses to victory and a permanent seat upon the coveted Iron Throne.
- House Stark of Winterfell
- House Tully of Riverrun
- Houses Baratheon and Lannister of Storm's End and Casterly Rock
- House Tyrel of Highgarden
- House Martell of Dorne
In addition to these houses you may have to contend with House Arryn of the Eyrie, the barbarians beyond the Wall, and the fearsome House Greyjoy of Pyke which holds an important sea route.
Most castles are surrounded by a "siege zone" with a negative point value. This is meant to simulate the cost of besieging a heavily defended castle.
Keep in mind that not only do you lose points by taking a siege zone, but your opponent technically gains points. So be sure to end a siege as quick as possible.
You may be tempted to allow a siege to remain unbroken; this can be an effective way of increasing your men per turn. But be warned, the enemy can use that siege zone to attack virtually every surrounding territory. You must judge if it is worth the risk.
This map is balanced for starting scenario play, I recommend using a 2,2,3,3,3,4,4,4 card progression and a 5% increase per turn. Higher percent increases can be used, I find the map works best when most of your points come from territories as opposed to cards. |

 | Utah Wars version 1.1 rated 3.7 (63 votes) by Mark Bauer | The Mormons, having finally escaped persecution, settled in the dry and arid regions of the American Southwest. As their numbers grew, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Days Saints pushed for the formation of their very own State, Deseret. This brought them back into conflict with the US government, who adamantly opposed the Mormon practice of plural marriage and deemed it "un-American and rebellious." The American public was whipped into a frenzy as erroneous reports spread of an open Mormon rebellion. In a hasty move President Buchanan dispatched a large regiment of federal troops to quell the perceived uprising. Now the troops are quickly approaching and the residents of Utah are panicked. Their leader, Brigham Young, has urged his followers to "whip them out" by any means necessary. Meanwhile, the Ute chief Black Hawk has taken this opportunity to feed his starving people. An alliance of Utes, Navajo, and Paiute Indians are steeling cattle and sacking Mormon outposts all over the region. The deadliest and most destructive conflict in the American West has erupted!
