According to the Federal Bureau of Prisons, escape from Alcatraz Island was impossible. The prison’s most effective escape deterrent was the 1.5-mile gauntlet of icy water and strong current separating it from land. Of course prisons are the home of reckless and desperate men, and despite the danger many escape attempts were made, all failing, often fatally. Willpower alone would not get you off this island; escape from Alcatraz would require an extraordinary plan. Such a scheme did exist, although it wasn't especially complex. What made it special was it’s daring. Among the prison population were members of the San Jose, San Francisco and Los Angeles families. The plan was simple - they would form an alliance. With their combined muscle they could acquire the resources and personal needed to take over the prison from within while crushing any dissent among the prison population. So it went. Prison guards were turned by force or bribe, weapons were smuggled in and a motor yacht large enough to carry the three crews purchased.
