Inferioris Germaniae - Team play Europe, The Netherlands, 17th century At the beginning of the 17th century The Netherlands were part of the Spanish empire. It, expecially the province of Holland, became one of the most wealthy regions of the world due to trade with the far east, an activity dominated by the Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie (VOC, United East Indian Company). Growing self awareness of the Dutch and repression of the protestants by the catholic Philips II resulted in a liberation war that lasted 80 years. On one side the Spanish headed by the Duke of Alva and the catholic provinces, on the other side the team of William of Orange Nassau and the protestant provinces. This map is based on a 17th century map of the region (http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bestand:Inferioris_Germaniae_Provinciarum_Nova_Descriptio_1604_Blaeu.jpg) by Willem Blaeu (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Willem_Blaeu), one of the most famous cartographers of that time.
