The Great War, or WWI as it became known after 1939, remains one of the deadliest conflicts in human history. Industrialization and the advent of mass production allowed new military technology to be readily available for combatants, and The Great War its testing ground. On one side stood 'The Allied Powers', consisting of The United Kingdom, The Russian Empire, France and Italy against 'The Central Powers', represented by the The German Empire, The Ottoman Empire, The Austro-Hungarian Empire and The Kingdom of Bulgaria. Warring chiefly took place in Europe where most countries had been swept up by the conflict, but by war's end a host of other nations also became involved, including The United States, India, Japan, Nepal, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and Canada, with battlefronts reaching as far as Mesopotamia, Palestine and The Caucasus Mountains.
