EXTREME VOX

Post by Lupus ferox » Sat Jul 24, 2010 9:59 am

EXTREME VOX - 500 + territories - 25 players

On some internet sites Castle Vox is described as "having giant maps" and "with unlimited players". I guess I haven't seen such a map sofar... Let's make one!

Let try to define an extreme situation.

With three units per territory we need 160x60 sized territories. On my MacBook Pro screen that would result in a 9x15 grid, or 135 territories. Is that giant? No...

So scrolling is necessary. Let's increase screen dimensions by 2 x 2. That seems reasonable, making scrolling not too difficult. That would result in a 18x30 grid or 540 territories. Is that large enough? Guess so. Would at least be a nice goal.

How many players do we want? In most maps there is about 10 to 20 territories per player. That would result in 50 to 25 players. Let's try 25 first...

How to make such a map? Expletus is the largest one I can make by hand, using the map editor. Defining 500+ territories and 25 players by hand? Nope. So we need an automatically generated map, with a sort of hex grid and players. Who is able to do so?

The theme... I can make a simple theme for that. We could also divide the board in let's say 2x3 rooms and have several map makers cooperate.

Just a few thoughts.

First question: do we think there is a market for an EXTREME VOX map?

i'd rather see something with more... character, like dark ages full blown.

just seems boring, no offense.

Hey, it ain't ready yet... Just a rough outline..... Just showing size ....

Think of alpha hex.....

We can put in everything you need to make it exciting.....

(except for those things that are against Sillysoft policy......)

The majority of countries may only need 2 units at a time (although if there are team-mates in the same country maybe more). So you might be able to get by with smaller countries.

Maybe keeping it to just 1-direction of scrolling would be easier on people. i.e. just up-and-down like a long webpage, and people could use their mouse-scroll-wheel. Just an idea.

Looking forward to see what comes out of this!

Okay... Something like this then....
I was thinking of The Odyssey as theme...
Making let's say 5-8 secluded area's. In every area one of Odysseus adventure's takes place, e.g. The Cyclops and Troy. In every secluded area 3-5 players start, so not a lot of scrolling is required because the initial battle area is restricted. This can be enhanced by giving negative values to those territories that connect the secluded areas....

Who is able to make such a luxb? (Don't start yet, let's discuss this a bit)

Okay, changed my mind. Odyssey won't work because it would be funny if someone else than Odysseus would win...

How 'bout this?

Trying to see it all is a bit of an ordeal... or should I say odyssey.

Something to be said for manageable sized stuff but that's just one Behemoth's opinion.

I think The Odyssey sounds like a cool theme for this map. No big deal if Odysseus doesn't win, we have Civil War and Revolutionary war maps also, where the 'wrong' side can win.

I like the layout iteration. Could maybe take a little height off each country still.

I like your Italian City-states idea, myself.

Call it Age of the Medicis.

I disagreewith dustin and paranoiarodeo?! You can make a reasonable approximation of Italy with just hexes.... The key is to keep the bonuses balanced; don't want the corners like Naples or Piedmont to have an advantage over the central powers like Florence b/c they have better defendable borders.....

I thought BJ meant making hexes by hand...... I thought he had something that would do that automatic. NM.

I've got it almost worked out.... By hand... I'll post it tomorrow...

I'm getting quite horrified by the idea of tracing them in the map editor....

Latest version. Northern part is still lousy.
I guess i have to use the Apennine mountain range to make some non crossable borders. Maybe also the river Po......

The Vox map editor has copy-n-paste shapes now. So you could make one hex, and then duplicate it a whole bunch of times, and move them around.

And now go for the fully automatic tracer.....

looks like the hex need to be more uniform(equal on all sides) because look at the mountain region near Gulf of Taranto...

its like the mountain goes thru a hex and so, has the same hex on both sides of the mountain.

would be confusing, unless that is addressed somehow

(that's the only mountain range that does that so you could just move that one mt up a little)

also, you might try more uniform shaped hexes but make the divider lines follow the hexes a little for aesthetics sake

In this case i used semi transparent mountains. I guess i have space enough so i will go for solid ones. That will need some repositioning. NP.

I'll send the naked map tomorrow. For squeezing in as many countries as possible i think this hex form will be best....

But looking forward to your creation. Certainly if it saves time in the map editor. (hell on earth , ;-0 )

Here's a good page with info on the various city-states to help with naming territories. So will each area start out with a "goldmine" type country for where the main city is, or will you just place castles there? More importantly, you should TOTALLY have UNIQUE names for EACH AND EVERY SINGLE TERRITORY. None of this Naples1, Naples2 lol....now THAT would be epic as players spend hours searching for wtf Molise is.....

bwahahahahaha

Can't find your page NC, the link is missing?. Indeed, i was thinking of unique names. For example Firenze (TU), in which TU stands for Tuscany. That might help a bit....

No goldmines, just cities
