music

Post by dustin » Wed Sep 15, 2010 5:15 pm

Hey gang,

I had a musician working on some music for Castle Vox. Here are 6 initial game music tracks, with different feels to them. They will probably be varied together in all games, but hopefully starting with a track that has a good feel for the genre of the map.

Your feedbacks are desired. Download the newest beta to hear them in the game.

the civil war:
johnny comes marching home meets pirates of the caribbean, with some american western thrown in at the end. like it

medieval:
yes it makes me feel medieval!

modern warfare:
i don't know if the techno clicks in the background are the best for this arrangement.
otherwise it's ok.

roman songs:
nice.

Interesting. I'm curious how the music will be used? Will it always be looping in the background of the game? Will different maps trigger different music?

They are all nice theme music and well put together. My favorite was Civil War. I liked that one a lot.

Medieval didn't give me the medieval vibe for good portions of it. It sounded a bit too electronic through the middle, imo.

Modern military didn't sound warlike or like battle music. I guess it depends how it will be used in the app.

Of the three Roman ones, I liked the one with the snare the best.

Civil War
I didn't like the beginning. The drum sounded too fake and the flute was too shrill. Otherwise, it was very interesting.

Medieval
Good music, but it sounded too Celtic to be an all-purpose medieval soundtrack.

Modern Military
Kinda boring and non-militaristic until 1:10. Afterwards, it sounded great.

Roman
Sounded great until 1:25, then it got too weird and lost the Roman vibe.

I think these are great!

The only thing I'd mention is that CV_Roman V2 and CV_Medieval sounded like they got cut off at the end.

Same issue.

.mov files would work or .aif sound files.

I managed to listen to civil war and a portion of roman. The files really struggle running on OSX snow.

They seem well produced and have a sense of story about them.

I suppose I'd imagined Vox sound effects to be either abstract like Lux or diegetic. Diegetic or 'actual sounds' would not exclude the use of music - but the music would be mixed to become part of an atmospheric track that was always present when playing the map.

Just an idea - but this could work really well if the music we heard in a colonial setting was that of an army band playing, distant and muffled by the other sounds on the atmospheric track (orders being yelled, infrequent cannon and muscat fire, the squark of scavenger birds, marching of soldiers, etc)

Yeah friend did a great job in creating great sounding tunes.

I felt he hit it dead on with civil war and modern. you lost me with the Roman one though.

here is how i felt for each one

Civil War
I thought this one was great and matched perfectly with the theme.

Medieval
good tune for medieval (although it kinda through me off a little towards middle/end with it's Scottish/Irish influenced tune)

Modern Military
As titled, it's a modern march and fits right.

Roman
For the life of me i don't get what's Roman about it......

It works now in the new version. It ads some dynamics to the game. Great!

Uncanny how music can bring about entirely different reactions.

I thought the Roman track(s) were the stand out. I liked that they slowly built without an overt sense of story. This restrained pace and mood was ideal for the game; they didn't compete for my attention during play like some of the other tracks did.

Medieval starts well but the wind instruments kinda killed it for me. I'm guessing it's MIDI pipes or flutes that I'm hearing there?

Modern. This track threatens to turn T2 Judgement Day a few times which could have been ok but unfortunately winds up sounding like nothing in particular. I struggled to stay interested, sorry.

Colonial is well made but would work better for the game if it wasn't so obvious. A slower build would help and a re-imaging of the main section (1 min +) to replace the energetic and upbeat 'hero's theme' with something more atmospheric and textural. The track would play like a 'memory' of a war scene, if that makes sense.

Anyway. My two cents.

Good job btw, composer.

Sorry BJ, this music is only for castle vox. No re-use for other projects.

Right now I just hard-coded in a few settings for a few maps. I will either:
- finish hard-coding in all the launch maps so they get the appropriate music.
or
- add a map XML option for maps to specify which music they would like.

For now, if you want a specific map to cue a certain music when it starts, let me know.

The music is a great touch. Is there a way to turn it off if I want to listen to my own (i)tunes?
