peasants have 0 starting armies, so they should not be playable. so they should be player ID 0, so they don't show up as a playable option.

Sure, that's my job! :)

Did you want me to do it the standard mapLAB way (via email) or would like feedback here in this thread?

It's a cool map BJ. Nice job.

Some things that I noticed:

What happened to the bonus labels for the castles and other countries with bonuses? Why have those been moved off screen? It would be better if you left those visible for the player.

The hexes are pretty small, which results in very crowded spaces. Might be a good idea to enlarge this map 1 or 2 times so that there is more room for the unit graphics. Right now several of the pawn units appear on top of the river, where they blend right in since both the archer and the river are green. Maybe giving the unit graphic a light (light as in thin and light as in bright) stroke would help them stand out better.

Your knight unit graphic is 500x500 pixels. That should be re-sized to to the proper 50x50 size.

Why isn't Robyn and the Wolf Clan on the same team? And the Sheriff and Prince John?

A couple typos in the map descriptiion:
map Description wrote:Lithe and listen oh Gentlemen that be of Free-born blood, I shall you tell (Should be "tell you") of a good yeoman whose name was Robyn Hood..
Image

As for balancing:

I really think that maps that don't use country bonuses don't work as well. This isn't Lux, so conquering land that's worth nothing doesn't get me any more troops, it only spreads out and kills the troops I do have. In this map you only have a very few countries that are worth income, the castles and 4 others. This puts the players who don't start with as much income at a disadvantage. The reason being is, in order for low income players to level the income gap, they have to conquer someone else's castle. But to do that, they have to devote all their resources, which leaves nothing to defend their home castle, which results in someone else swooping in to take it. Then they're back to square one with a huge income gap to make up. Therefore the player with the most income at the start wins every game.

King Richard won every game I played very easily because that players income is rarely under any threat since it's so far away. If a player breaks free and makes a raid, Richard has plenty of time to just plop a bunch of pawns there to counteract.

The sheriff also has 35 starting income, but 15 of that is part of a continent that is under constant threat from Robyn. Once Robyn pops that continent (which happens often), the sheriff is all the way down to only 20 income, and thereby making the sheriff easy pickings for Richard. Then Richard effectively doubles his income and is essentially unstoppable because none of the other players can get to any income.

By the time Robyn has defeated prince John (or vice versa) they are so weak from fighting each other, that they too are easy pickings for Richard to mop up.

And the wolf clan is caught in the middle and can't expand anywhere.

I think this map would greatly benefit from more (a lot more) country bonuses. I think teams would help also.

The 40 pawns that the inactive player has don't seem to be serving a logical purpose. In all the games I played, no one ever even tried to attack those. Doing so would be a fools errand. In order to defeat 40 pawns a player would have to devote a lot of their precious, hard to come by income. And if they succeed, they are rewarded with a new front to have to worry about! Why would a player want to do that? If you want to make those spaces a tempting target then I think you should make them worth something, and make them a lot easier to conquer by putting only about 5 pawns there. If you don't want players to use those corridors, then you should just make them barriers.

Great updates! The map is even better now!

I found one broken connection:

Image

I think the Castle unit needs to stand out a little more, right now it has a tendency to blend right in to the background. Maybe give it a slight dark stroke or make it a little darker.

I still think the 40 neutral pawn army should be lowered to about 15 or 20 pawns. I never saw a bot try to take it, and I only ever took one, a single time. But only because I had plenty of troops to spare and had pretty much already won the game.

Lastly, what are your thoughts about making this a team map? 2v2v1

i may make a team version as well, after this passes the map lab
(but it will release as a 1x5)

possible teams would be:

robyn & nottinghamshire & king richard
vs
prince john & wolf clan & the sheriff
-------------------------------------------
robyn & nottinghamshire
vs
prince john & wolf clan & the sheriff
vs
king richard
vs
wolf clan

what do you think?

This area is a problem

Image

Those hexes are too obstructed by the river and they are also split and appear on both sides of the river.

I'd suggest just deleting those 2 hexes, they aren't really needed.

Same goes for this area
Image

If you're going to have a barrier, then 1 single country should NEVER appear on both sides of said barrier, that is very confusing for a player.

That hex could also just be deleted.

If you match up those hexes, it looks like it should be good.

well those hexes are now part of an updated theme so shouldn't be a problem.
unless you mean some other hexes?

That seems to be The Velvet Elvis' host. I assume he has not updated the map (and theme) yet.

I never had it installed and it loads correctly for me.
