Luxtoberfest Survivor

The original topic can be found here for reference.

Wednesday 15th - The First Order Of Business
We have thirteen teams this year, so the very first thing we're going to do is get rid of one of them. This will be done by one member from each team playing on the infamous Shrooms map from the Luxtober 2005 Tournament of Champignons (make sure it's installed!) with 5 'Empty' robots. The time it takes to win the map will be recorded. The slowest team is eliminated. Each team representative will be asked before they play whether they would like to play once or twice. They are not allowed to change this decision based on the results of the first game. If they play twice, their average time will be used - so this can either screw up a great first time or improve a bad first time. The groups below will be balanced at four teams each based on these results. Teams not representing will automatically disqualified, if more than one team doesn't show up or two losing teams have the same God-awful times, it'll be decided by a roll of my special weighted dice.

Tournament Settings:
All games will be 3 vs. 3 or 2 vs. 2 vs. 2 on the Luxtoberfest Survivor map (same countries, continents, and connections as regular Classic - again, make sure you install it!) with the following settings - 5,5,5 cards with a 0% continent bonus, random countries and a 45 second timer.

Groups & Teams:
The teams have been split into 3 qualifying groups (which I've tried to balance somewhat) as indicated by colour...bear in mind that until the Shrooms elimination detailed above, these groups won't be 100% accurate.

Team A : djdee, Meron, Digital Jihad, Trinkett, Qwert, JAL

Team E : 3DA, Pascaline, Fane, The Wontrob, Dominator, n00less cluebie

Team H : deep blue, jelly, BigSausage, Odelay, Enokrad, whirlplaid

Team I : Big Will E Style, Marauder, MathiasEE, Pars, Supergood, mofo

Team B : C-Rex, General K, Nimrod7, Deuce, MaW1028, Grozoth

Team C : MissChaos, SnyperEye, Precious, Mike, *Manimal, SecondTermMistake

Team J : Lantern, TazzyGirl, Frost, Kain Mercenary, Beetroot, cheech99

Team K : NN-Grim, Crimsonhosking, Captain Murphy, Oshman, Sir Isaac, Cortes

Team D : mud, magpie, minorking, blind willie, hoodie, Dangerous Beans

Team F : Packman, Michelle, Scad, Drifter, jwd, tech1

Team G : Mazza, soundboy, Eric the Great of Antarctica, The Tide, Thetan, GYPCOUNT

Team L : CrazyWoman, Rated Insane, Naraku, Kostbird, Micella, Mr. M

Team M : compton nick, Zainster14, ZMaster, thogg, sruck, deez nuts

Gameplay:
In all games throughout the tournament with the exception of the finals, the winning team will nominate a member of the losing team. The nominated player (who must have played at least one match for their team) is in limbo and may not play any further games for their team. Like last year chances may arise allowing players in limbo to complete individual tasks that may earn them a place back onto their teams - details of this are of course top secret and will be announced privately at the appropriate time to the players concerned.

Group Stage
Only one team will move forward to the finals from each group, together with the highest ranked second place team. There will be a minimum of 6 games per group, each team playing a single game against each of the other teams in the same group. This means each team will play at least 3 times, which makes a good team turnout in these Group Stages especially important - for each game you lose, you lose a team member. Scoring is simple - 3 points for a win, 1 for a loss, 0 for a no-show. This means that there is a (slim) chance of qualifying from your group just by showing up with a team and playing. Top scoring team qualifies for the final - in the event of ties, a sudden death matches will be played.

Thursday 16th 7pm GMT+1 until whenever :
All Group One games.

Friday 17th 7pm GMT+1 until whenever :
All Group Two games.

Saturday 18th 7pm GMT+1 until whenever :
All Group Three games.

Finals

Sunday 19th 7pm GMT+1 until whenever :
Any and all players in limbo are returned to their teams. Finals will be held between the winning teams from each group, plus the highest ranked runner up. Again, each team will play each other team once, with the same scoring system as before. Playoffs will be held as necessary in the event of ties to determine the medal positions.

Missions:
Missions will be PM'ed to all team members just prior to each game here on the forums. It's important that all members of all teams have valid forum accounts and can check their PM's when instructed to do so. A mission can be completed by an individual player, by all, or any part of a team. Missions may vary, but might include such things as :
  • - Hold North America & Australia for 3 rounds
    - Hold Europe & Australia for 3 rounds
    - Hold 30 visible (30+1) armies in both Madagascar & Japan for 2 rounds
    - Hold 30 visible (30+1) armies in both Madagascar & Iceland for 2 rounds
    - Hold 30 visible (30+1) armies in both Iceland & Japan for 2 rounds
    - Hold any 25 countries with at least 3 visible (3+1) armies on each
    - Hold Europe, Africa & South America for 2 rounds
    - Hold Europe, Africa & Australia for 2 rounds
    - Hold 10 visible (10+1) armies on each Capital City (see the map for details)
    - Hold 10 visible (10+1) armies on each Red Star (see the map for details)
    - Kill player X from the opposing team
    - Hold Asia for 2 rounds with at least 5 visible (5+1) armies on each country
    - etc, etc.
Other Rules
Unless the mission specifically requests it, you are not allowed to kill a member of the opposing team - if this happens, the team that made the kill loses by default. So think before you click! Any player with only one territory must attack for a card. This means we can't get into a stalemate situation. It goes without saying that there should be no disclosure or hints on mission objectives in the game chat. This obviously defeats the purpose of the game and puts your team at an immediate disadvantage. I strongly suggest the use of IM software for discussing team tactics during games.

Finally - any questions or points needing clarifying, please post them here or PM me and I'll answer all questions. It's highly possible I've missed a possible situation or overlooked something. The same goes for problems with scheduling, etc...two groups want to switch their group stage games, etc. Otherwise, I'll see some of you on the 15th ;)

what time is the time trial starting?

I can host the time trials on the 15th anytime - I might even do it by email, meaning you email me when you want to play and I'll host to order...that should cover all time zones.

The actual tournament would be midday US time to mid-evening I guess, but again I can probably host odd games at odd times if necessary.

It's starting then, but I'm aware of the time differences - I'll be hosting until the required games have been played. Starting at that time allows anyone in the Middle/Far East and Australia to play as well. It's exactly the same time schedules as we have had the last couple of years.

by The Wontrob
So you will wait for teams to show up? Or do we pick the time for our teams' games? Or how does this work exactly?

The Wontrob is confused

Ideally, all teams in each group will get there as soon as they can on their days, and we'll take the games as we get them. There's no point trying to make a definitive schedule, the games don't take that long.

due to scheduling conflict i will have to withdraw from my team

sorry guys

Just to let you all know, I won't be able to play on Saturday until after 5:45PM pacific. Hope that doesn't mess anything up...

I hate to say this, but the 16th is a work day. I will try very hard to break away, but I am a rather integral part at my shop, so it might be hard to break away.......

Please forgive my stupidity, are we (if I can play) starting at 5:00 PM Pacific standard?

I think I did the conversion right.

I would appreciate help.

Thank you,
SquirleyWhirly

Preacherman,

I answered my own question on the previous post, but I now have a new question:

What will the exact settings be for the Shroom map qualifier?

Thank you,
Whirl

I do believe it is 1 player vs 5 empty bots. AKA no competition but the originally placed armies.
I may be wrong, but that is what I enterpreted.

I am pacific time zone so hopefully this will be beneficial for our team jwd, because I have no life an Saturdays ( undies, Cheetos, computer, t.v.) I can stand by and play anytime. Just let me know where and when. AS to shrooms I have never played so one of you all need to do that one.

Exactly right - empty bot does nothing at all but place armies each turn, doesn't attack countries or gain cards or fortify, nothing - so it is literally a time trial against the map. Settings for the map will be random armies, random placement - but I will restart the computer should be lucky enough to start with a continent.

I assume you mean you will restart if anyone starts with a continent? or just if a bot does?

I doubt it. Hence you take your chances on 1 game or 2. you could get lucky and do it quick if you get a continent, or unlucky and struggle with dice.

Hmm not sure yet, but whatever I do it'll be the same for everyone - I'll probably restart for any initial continents.

OK chaps, I'm hosting from now until whenever - one representative from each team please, just pop into the room whenever and we'll get this done :)
