Enabling Retina Display Support on OS X

Post by paranoiarodeo » Sun Jun 15, 2014 7:23 pm

WARNING: This is an untested feature; possibly glitchy!
Do not attempt unless you understand all steps below!

(This tweak makes Lux look better on non-retina displays too; especially when using resized maps or fullscreen mode.)

1. Quit Lux Delux.
2. Right click the Lux Delux app icon in the Finder.
3. Select "Show Package Contents" from the contextual menu.
4. Locate the info.plist file inside the Contents folder.
5. Open info.plist in your favorite text editor.
6. At the end of the file, find and replace:

Code: Select all

  </dict>
</plist>

Code: Select all

  <key>NSHighResolutionCapable</key>
  <true/>
  </dict>
</plist>
7. Save info.plist and close.

Newbies:
8a. Right click the Lux Delux app again; select "Duplicate."
9a. Right click the new duplicate app; select "Get Info."
10a. Verify the "Open in Low Resolution" checkbox is unchecked in the General info pane.
11a. Delete original app; rename duplicate.

Geeks:
8b. Open the Terminal app.
9b. Execute "touch /Applications/Lux\ Delux.app/"; sudo, if necessary.
10b. Enjoy a beverage; there is no 11b.

Conclusion:
12. Launch updated app; enjoy!
13. Post positive or negative feedback in this thread.

(If you break something, then download a new copy of the Lux Delux app from Sillysoft.)

I've only tested on Mavericks (10.9.3), but assume it'll work as far back as Lion (10.7.4). Same goes for Java; I've only tested using Apple's current distribution of Java 6. Googling around it seems like early versions of Oracle's Java 7 distribution didn't play nice with high resolution OS X, but later updates were fine; not sure about Java 8, but assume it's okay too. I should also note that the Lux app needs to be updated with double resolution graphics for maps, armies, explosions, etc., but at the very least, you'll see better text rendering immediately.
