Defund the police is an atrocious political campaign that does nothing but alienate the very people it needs support from the most.
If you need three paragraphs to explain why you’re not actually defunding the police, but passing complex reforms and shifting over the work to expanded social workers, just fucking say Demilitarize the Police or Reform the Police.
Defund the Police is so toxic that it actively prevents moderates from engaging with the rest of the movement’s ideas. Until the most left part of the party scraps it and starts over, that’s where it’s going to stay.
Until that happens, any conversations with voters are going to be pointless, since you’ve split them with such an extreme take, perceived or otherwise.
We need the police, just like we need some reforms. As long as the movement is basing itself on a radical, confusing pitch, it will never reach the people who do not already support it.
Of the people, by the people, for the people, for whatevs.
