Middle-Earth Map

Post by IdahoEv » Thu Jan 22, 2004 5:35 am

Thanks to the cool new tutorial, I designed a Lux map of Middle Earth today. It has 57 territories in 13 continents. If you install the theme that comes with it, the territories appear on top of a labelled map of Middle Earth, and mountains and wide rivers are drawn between inaccessible territories.

You can download it from:
http://ww ... com/lux

I'm releasing it as a Beta because I'm not certain it's balanced and fair yet, and I'm also not 100% sure I found all of the bugs. It's really hard to make sure all the territories are linked right.

Enjoy; post comments here or send them to luxer at LRDesign dot com.

Bugfix version up

Post by IdahoEv » Thu Jan 22, 2004 7:54 am

Thanks for the kudos, Preach.

Beta version 3 is online now, with three or four fixed territory connections.

Much thanks to Preacherman and robscottkerr for helping me catch the errors.

Post by IdahoEv » Tue Jan 27, 2004 2:33 am

Beta 4 is done. Much more balanced map, new improved theme! DL from map city, or go to http://www ... com/lux for the whole thing including theme.

Fun map, but it's kind of difficult to tell which countries connect to what. If they share a border the line should overlay, not be next to eachother. Or maybe I'm just looking at it wrong.

Part of the difficulty, if I understand your concern correctly, is that Lux displays the brighter color for the continent boundary outside the territory and the fainter color inside the territory. If you overlap the territory boundaries exactly, then you only see the fainter color. To my eye, this can make it very difficult to see which continent a territory belongs to, because the faint color inside is overwhelmed by the player color. It's okay on the classic risk board, because we all know where the continents are.

But if I didn't know, it would be extremely difficult for me to tell where the continent boundary between Europe and Asia was on Classic Risk.

So I left some space between the territories so that some of the bright continent color shows up between the territories. This is a guessing game, of course, because people can set their line thickness. I set it so that the territories more or less connect if you use the default thickness. If yours is set very thin, then, there will be gaps between the territories.

Ultimately it comes down to personal preference, I think. I'll try lining up a few of the territories to make direct contact and see if I think it's still visible/playable. If so, I may re-do the map that way.

Thanks for the comment,
Ev

Well, no. There is space between countries of the same continent. Do they have the same coordinates for points on shared borders?

No, they don't. I left space between adjacent countries for the same reason: it makes their borders and continent-affiliation more visible to have the brighter color visible along their edge.

What I tried to do was leave about 5 pixels between neighboring countries and 10-15 between continents, the latter so that there's room for both continents' colors to show.

Nice Board-Suggestion

Post by iDye » Sun Feb 01, 2004 9:23 am

Love the board, Idaho! It takes a few plays to get a handle on the continents. One suggestion- Where the sea route connects at the top right of the board, reduce the size of the two countries that adjoin the bay so it is clear that the sea route only goes to the middle country in the bay.

The fact that my "Show Continents" command comes and goes has made it harder to "see" all the continents, but that's not your fault!

Have found no glitches so far. Excellent graphics, very easy install instructions included with the download. An all around impressive job. Keep up the good work!!

B-Ron Middle Earth v2.2

I am pleased to present another Middle Earth map.

Download the map and CRUCIAL background theme here:
http://www.virmalo.net/lux/B-Ron_MiddleEarth_v2.2.sit

As you will see, this map is based on a different method than all previous Lux maps. This Middle Earth map represents my first attempt at this method; please share any comments or criticism so things can be developed and improved in future maps.

Thanks,
Brett (B-Ron)
