LATE MAY - NEW Lux Board Games Tournament

Post by Milltycoon » Thu Mar 28, 2013 12:38 am

(This tournament will begin after Mentor's ends.)

MillTycoon introduces the “Lux Board Games” Games! (or the LBGG’s)

Coming in May, I will be hosting a new tournament, open to all. This may or may not be a one-time event.

The LBGG’s will take place over 6 days (days to be determined), including 5 “regular” days and one Championship Game on the 6th day.

During each regular day, participants will play on any of three randomly rotating maps. Each day will contain a different set of 3 maps, for a total of 15 maps over the course of the 5 regular days. These days will not necessarily be consecutive. Each regular day will be scheduled for 4 to 6 hours (exact time to be announced beforehand), and participants may play in a lot of games or just a few. The final game (the game during which the day’s End Time occurs) will continue uninterrupted until there is a winner, just like with all previous games.

The maps I have chosen are nearly never played in public Lux rooms. Some have bizarre pathing, others are more intuitive, others require unconventional strategies, and most can be vehicles for either short or long games. The theme, of course, is Board Games.

Day 1: Scrabble Rotation.
Scrabblux, Post-Game Scrabble, Scrabble Letters Lux
Day 2: Checkers/Backgammon Rotation.
Checkers, Chinese Checkers, Backgammon
Day 3: War Games Rotation.
BattleLux, Battleships, Luxtego
Day 4: Chess Rotation.
Chess, Lux Chessboard, LuxMate Knight Moves
Day 5: Dice Games Rotation.
Monopoluxy, Pursuit, Master Detective Cluxdo

The players with the 6 highest scoring averages after the 5th day will be invited to play the Championship Game. (One game, winner takes all.) The Championship Game map will be the baffling “Snakes and Ladders” map.

SCORING

The LBGG’s will have an unconventional scoring system, based upon the fact that Full House games might be rare. In my observation, lots of MOTW “chases” ca. 2010 were distorted by the fact that only occasionally would there be several people in the room, and those 5- or 6-player wins usually made 2- and 3-player games irrelevant to the medal count. Someone who got 2 FH wins could only be caught by someone grinding through hours of bot-heavy wins (which might be all that were available), such that a player’s timing, i.e., when he/she logged on and how busy the community was, became a significant variable in his/her chances to medal. Therefore, my scoring system attempts to balance the greater accomplishment of winning a human-heavy game vs. attempts to make bot-heavy games relevant enough for people to have incentive to play them.

People will be given points like in Castles: 8 6 4 3 2 1 for 1st to 6th place, with 1 point extra for each kill. Important: Kills of bots (that start the game) do not count toward one’s kill bonus. (Kills of bots that replace AFK’s do count.) For games featuring fewer than 6 humans, the bottom numbers will be dropped accordingly (a 4-player game will give 8 6 4 and 3. A 2-player game will give 8 6.) After a player’s score is determined, there is a percentage reduction for the scores of the lesser-human games; 85% for 5-players, 70% for 4, 55% for 3, and 40% for 2. This means that the winner of a 3-player game will receive 8 points (plus, for example, 1 extra point for 1 kill = 9), then their score is multiplied by 55% (55% X 9 is 4.95 points). Thus, a 3-player win will be of slightly less value than a 3rd place FH finish with 1 kill. A 2-player winner that kills the other human (there is no kill bonus if a bot kills a human) would receive 8 + 1 points (9) X 40%, or 3.6 points, i.e. somewhere in the middle between a 3rd and 4th place FH finish. A player’s Tournament Score will be the AVERAGE of his/her game scores, not the cumulative total. Thus, it is possible to get one of the top 6 scores by only playing bot games, but there is little margin for error, and good finishes in FH games will yield better averages than bot-heavy wins (though poor finishes in larger games may yield worse averages).

A few important details: Games of any size won by a bot (including a bot taking over for an AFK) will be annulled on the scoreboard. Meanwhile, bots that do not win are considered irrelevant to the placement; even if a 3-player game ends with a placement of “Human, Bot, Bot, Human, Bot, Human”, the 3 humans will still be given 8, 6 and 4 points for their placement. Also, there will be a 4-game minimum (4 games that finish with a human winning) in order to qualify for a spot in the Championship Game. There is no maximum game limit.

BONUSES
After all game scores are averaged into one’s Tournament Score, there will be a 0.1 bonus for every new map a player wins on (after his/her first win). With 15 maps, this could be as high as a 1.4 boost to a player’s average. Also, there is an additional 0.1 bonus for every new day of player participation (after his/her first day). This will be given even if a player’s only game on a day is annulled due to a bot win. If (and only if) a player plays all 5 days, the 5th day bonus will be 0.3, rather than 0.1. Thus, that player would receive 0.1 for participation on Days 2, 3 and 4, and 0.3 for Day 5, for a total of a 0.6 boost. This combination means that if a player wins on all 15 maps, they will get a 2-point boost to their Tournament Score.

SCORE EXAMPLE:

Toothpick Intel plays 5 games in this tournament.

Day 2: 5-human game. Chinese Checkers. Win 3 kills
Day 2: 4-human game. Chin. Checkers. (ignoring bots) 3rd 0 kills
Day 2: FH game. Backgammon 5th 1 kill
Day 4: 3-human game. Lux Chessboard. Win 2 kills
Day 4: 3 human game. Chess. Bot won game --

The bot-win game is immediately stricken from the standings, leaving him 4 official games (the first 4).

Game 1: 8 points (1st place) + 3 (kills) = 11 X .85 (reduction) = 9.35
Game 2: 4 points (3rd place) X .70 = 2.8
Game 3: 2 points (5th place) + 1 (kill) = 3. (FH = No reduction)
Game 4: 8 points (1st place) + 2 (kills) = 10 X .55 (reduction) = 5.5

Average: 9.35 + 2.8 + 3 + 5.5 = 20.65 / 4 = 5.1625.
Bonuses: 0.1 for win on Lux Chessboard (bonus for every win after first win). 0.1 for play on Day 4 (bonus for every day played after first day)

Final Score for Toothpick Intel: 5.1625 + 0.2 (bonuses) = 5.3625.

Extra Scoring Detail: There will be no negative bonuses for games running longer than an hour, but a game could be restarted at my discretion if it seems to be hopelessly stalled after 75 or 90 minutes. I am as yet undecided on how to allot kill bonuses or placement points to those players eliminated in such a game before the 60-minute mark (before it marathoned beyond their control).

ODDS AND ENDS

Games begun with bots will be re-started with new human players until the end of the 3rd round, though since this is a tournament, there may be a discretionary rule put in place to prevent players from guesting in and out in order to “dodge” certain maps, or as a strategy to thwart the favorable start of another player. I reserve the right to provide additional moderation when necessary.

So that I can properly host, I will not be playing in the games. Because I don’t have experience with germane technology, this will be a very low-tech setup. I will determine which map (of the 3 in a day’s rotation) will be played by rolling a die on my desk (a 1 or a 2 would represent one of the maps, and then 3 or 4, and 5 or 6). I will keep score manually and post the results as soon as possible, and I encourage others to help keep my scoring records accurate. If I must go AFK during a tournament day, I’ll hopefully be able to find someone to take over the duties of randomly choosing the maps and logging the placement of the finishes. For the sake of convenience, please only use one screenname throughout this tournament.

During the Championship Game, I will restart until the player with the highest Tournament Score is chosen by the randomizer to go first. I will try to accommodate all 6 players who make the Championship Game, but if someone does not show up after a reasonable amount of time, and thus must forfeit his/her slot, we will play the Championship Game with a bot in his/her place.

PRIZE

Although I have no authority to issue medals (and no money to offer a merchandise prize), the Winner of the LBGG’s will have their name prominently displayed as part of my ensuing new Lux map, which will be board-game themed.

Good luck to everyone. Signup is not necessary (you can enter the rooms and play without restriction), but it’d be helpful to see a rough estimate here of who is interested.

TSK: Stickied. And updated title.

DAY 1 (the Scrabble Day) is now tentatively scheduled for 3:00-7:00 PM EST on Wednesday, May 15th.

DAY 2 (the Checkers/Backgammon Day) is now tentatively scheduled for 5:00-9:00 PM EST on Friday, May 17th.

If there is an outcry for either of these days or times, I'll consider changing them. Also, if the times are unfair to participants living in various places around the world, I'll try to schedule some of the future times correspondingly.

Looking forward to this!

We had a few fun games of Chinese Checkers last night... jesterme, plummy and Whirl were dazzling. Sadly, plummy can't be there on Friday, but I hope others will be.

Our next tournament day will begin at 7:00 EST on Friday, May 17th.

DAY 1 RECAP
We played 6 games, though the first game was won by a bot, and thus by rule is nullified (though it counts toward player participation).

Game 1. Scrabblux. Opti and Newbeslaya played. A bot won, thus nullifying the game.

Game 2. Scrabblux. 2-human game. GFips won, eliminating Opti.

Game 3. Scrabble Letters Lux. 3-human game. GFips won. Opti finished second. Newbeslaya finished third. GFips made both kills.

Game 4. Post-Game Scrabblux. Full House game. GFips won. 2nd through 6th were Kingsize (2nd), Wakatanka (3rd), Newbeslaya (4th), Tsirig (5th) and Opti (6th). Kingsize killed Opti, GFips killed Tsirig, GFips killed Newbeslaya, Kingsize killed Wakatanka, and GFips killed Kingsize.

Game 5. Scrabble Letters Lux. 3-human game. Sergio el Capo won. Brian45 finished second. Pimpin finished third. Sergio made both kills.

Game 6. 4-human game. Pimpin won. 2nd through 4th were Serial Killer (2nd), Sergio el Capo (3rd) and Brian45 (4th). Pimpin made all three kills.

Game Bonuses and Day Bonuses will be added eventually (and are shown here in parentheses). Game Bonuses are accrued by winning on multiple unique maps (GFips currently has a 0.2 Game Bonus), and Day Bonuses are accrued by participating on multiple tournament days (all of today's players are eligible if they participate in the future).

Brian45: 2 games. 2nd (6pts) X 55% (3-human reduction) = 3.3, 4th (3pts) X 70% (4-human reduction) = 2.1. Average: 2.7
GFips: 3 games. 1st (8) + kill (1) X 40% (2-human reduc.) = 3.6, 1st (8) + kill (2) X 55% (3-human reduc.) = 5.5, 1st (8) + kill (3) X 100% (FH) = 11. Average: 6.7
Kingsize: 1 Game. 2nd (6) + kill (2) X 100% (FH) = 8
Newbeslaya: 3 games (one annulled, though still counts for participation). 3rd (4) X 55% (3-human) = 2.2, 4th (3) X 100% (FH). Average: 2.6
Opti: 4 games (one annulled). 2nd (6) X 40% (2-human) = 2.4 points, 2nd (6) X 55% (3-human) = 3.3 points. 6th (1) X 100% (FH). Average: 2.23.
Pimpin: 2 games. 3rd (4) X 55% (3-human) = 2.2, 1st (8) + kill (3) X 70% (4-human) = 7.7. Average: 4.95.
Sergio el Capo: 2 games. 1st (8) + kill (2) X 55% (3-human) = 5.5, 3rd (4) X 70% (4-human) = 2.8. Average: 4.15
Serial Killer: 1 Game. 2nd (6) X 70% (4-human) = 4.2.
Tsirig: 1 Game. 5th (2) X 100% (FH) = 2.
Wakatanka: 1 Game. 3rd (4) X 100% (FH) = 4

Only Opti has thus far gotten to 4 games, which is the stated minimum (though that could change if it must). Thus, these are otherwise all partial scores, and people are encouraged to keep playing.

Kingsize: 8
GFips: 6.7
Pimpin: 4.95.
Serial Killer: 4.2.
Sergio el Capo: 4.15
Wakatanka: 4
Brian45: 2.7
Newbeslaya: 2.6
Opti: 2.23.
Tsirig: 2.

Wakatanka: 1 game. (2 in tournament so far.) 3rd (4) X 55% (3-player) = 2.2. Tournament average: 3.1.

After re-reading my rules, I see that annulled games do not count toward the 4-game minimum participation requirement for the Final. I wrote this so that someone couldn't lose 3 times to a bot, then play well in one game and make the Final with only 1 (or 2 or 3) "real games." Thus, Opti has not yet played 4 official games. My apology for the mistake. Annulled games do still count for Day bonuses, but this doesn't affect anyone at this time.

Pimpin, Schroberts, Markus Tulus, Newbeslaya and GFips have played at least 4 games, the minimum (at this time) for eligibility in the Finals. They are marked below with asterisks.

Pimpin, GFips, Markus Tulus, Schroberts and Wakatanka will receive a Day Bonus (0.1 each). Pimpin and Schroberts will receive Game Bonuses (0.1 each).

In a previous recap, I shortchanged Mumps one game in his average. His correct average is 2.05. I also made the same mistake with Newbeslaya as with Opti. Newbeslaya had before today only played in 3 official games, the 4th having been annulled. However, he played his 4th official game today, neutralizing the problem. My apologies in both cases.
