Weekly Chase Planning and Feedback

Post by Bean » Thu Feb 28, 2019 9:27 am

Edit for intro:

Here is a thread for announcing, discussing, requesting, and gesticulating around what the map(s) and/or theme will be for the Weekly Chase.

The Weekly Chase currently starts and ends at 6pm on Sunday. Currently, the chase is the only contribution to the overall Lux seedings (best 12 of 16 weekly ranks). The only rooms that count in the weekly chase are labeled "Weekly Chase" in the "Network Games" tracker. Week numbering is by month and week (e.g. 3.2 = 2nd week of March. )

If the map does not get changed right at 6pm, the rankings still reset automatically for the week. Any mod can change the map in the rooms so if you get nervous around the transition, you can make an appeal to get on with it. It might even happen that the map gets changed before 6pm, depending on priorities and what is going on in the rooms.

It might even happen that there are different maps in each Weekly Chase room. The system is simple. If it's in the Weekly Chase room, it counts for the weekly rank and seeding.

Original first post:

The Castles theme month is winding down. Time to start planning for upcoming weeks.

I'm planning on Antarctica for next week's (3.1) chase map. Thinking of Canada, Gold Rush, Hot Gates, Cubes for near future. Other ideas welcome.

So far the rankings restructuring has had little discernible effect. Malik still mostly plays IRE. Landlord and a few others mostly play Bio Deux. Some good games happened. I forgot how much I like Castle Lux Merchants. Also, Castle Lux MP. Hoping for at least one good game of Scotland on Sunday, but the population of non-map-attached is like 2, not counting mods.

"No effect" is actually good in one respect. It seems to me (and correct me if I'm wrong) that there is little backlash. Q seemed disappointed Castles wasn't it's old self, but that is not the same as backlash on the ranking restructuring generally, but just the theme for the month. I sort of agree with him, but still like Castles maps a lot and quite simply there just are not enough players or time rich mods to run the old castles style event.

More importantly, die hard bio players apparently were not fibbing when they said they don't care about the rankings and just want to play bio. It appears (from actual feedback I have garnered, that bio is loved because it's familiar and easy on the brain in other ways (so one can relax at one's desk and not have to concentrate too hard), and more importantly short. I personally prefer games that are not relaxing and require a little more intense and sustained concentration, and of course the longer more dynamic end games in larger maps. Sometimes I like checkers and spades though, for the same reasons I sometimes like Bio Deux or Rome II, and admittedly even that one short rush of concentration that happens at the end of these short games does not appear to be on offer from my own brain.

Hopefully the repair of the rankings can add integrity to the system over the longer term, but at least it doesn't do much harm in the near term since of course we still host bio deux games and there is a monthly ranking ladder there.

Anyway, I will emphasize shorter maps as much as I can in the coming weeks to accommodate that preference among the remaining players. My own volunteer moderation efforts continue to be focused on this new curated weekly chase scheme, and I'm sorry for not having the time or inclination to keep up any significant support the bio deux rooms. I think you guys are a self regulating community though. The rule changes help a bit. There are other moderators too.

Antarctica this Week (3.1)

It's a pretty quick and fun map. It has a neg income in the middle, but it is sometimes worth it. 59 territories.

On deck: Roman Empire II

Week 3.2: Rapa Nui

Post by Bean » Sun Mar 10, 2019 3:00 pm

I was doing Rapa Nui 3.3, but to accommodate a RE II fan's schedule, just reversing the two. Rapa Nui is THIS week. RE II next.

Top ranks are stealing this week without even appearing in the chase map.

Week 3.3: Roman Empire II

Post by Bean » Sun Mar 17, 2019 3:21 pm

Week 3.3: Roman Empire II. This is one of the most played Lux maps of all time. It is short and sweet. Income less important. Cards get big and the end game comes faster than you might expect.

Week 3.4: Canada HD.

Post by Bean » Wed Mar 20, 2019 8:42 pm

Week 3.4: Canada HD. This is a cool map that a lot of folks like. 64 territories. Single territory bonuses and some challenging pathing. Doesn't tend to marathon. Starting this coming Sunday evening.

Week 3.4: Ca

Post by Bean » Sun Mar 24, 2019 6:09 pm

Congrats to Pauley for winning week 3.3 in Roman Empire II. This week (3.4) is Canada HD.

I added bio 3 setting to one of the chase rooms for variety.

Chase Map Changed to Cube Wars

Post by Bean » Thu Apr 04, 2019 7:38 am

No one sees the awesomeness that I see in Wars of the Roses and folks playing Cubes instead, so I give you Cube Wars. I'll set one of the hosts on bio Cubes if we get the extra host.

Trying out the 20 cards, 15 conts setting. 47 seconds. Cubes has 180 territories and can marathon if the income is high enough relative to cards. It's a fun map. Clicky-dee-dickedty.

4.2: cube wars again.

Post by Bean » Tue Apr 09, 2019 3:50 pm

forgot to announce it. Cubes only got half a week last week, so a little more won't hurt.

4.3: WWII Europe Redux

Post by Bean » Sat Apr 13, 2019 7:37 pm

This coming week a cool Europe map. It has sea territories. 90 total territories. It's a fun map. I remember Escapehatch dominating it as MOTM not too long before he appeared to quit lux. I miss that guy. Anyway, hope to see a few good fh games this week. cheers.

WWII Europe Redux Notes

Post by Bean » Wed Apr 17, 2019 9:27 am

Fun map with 90 territories. Here are some things to know in advance if you are new to it.

a. Confusing sea slots mostly behave like actual seas (you need to use the sea to get to the land on the other side), but they are marked by circles that are confusing because the circle represents all the water around it to the dotted lines or to land.

Tricky sea slot issues: Gibraltar, Sicily, Crete, Ireland, Denmark You can't just hop from Ireland to Wales, for example. The sea slot circle is NW of Ireland and is the only route. Gibraltar is the worst.

Sea slots get you across the map pretty fast, which is fun.

b. Incomes are a little imbalanced but sometimes seem logical from a real world perspective. Britain is huge income (and protected by water). Russia is even more huge, but too many borders. Peripheral areas are not as wealthy but do provide good access for card kills.

Income imbalances are worsened by the cont setting if it's high. As with Last King, there are places you should not let go for free, like Britain, no matter how "cool" you are.

There you go.
