Satsuma Rebellion

From 1639 to 1854, Japan's government banned virtually all contact between its people and the outside world, isolating and preserving its feudal society while the rest of the world underwent two centuries of enormous change. When the policy was reversed and the country finally reopened, Japan was thrust from a medieval era into an industrial one. Many samurai resisted the new order but were overpowered by the imperial government and its modern army. They made their final stand in 1877, led by Saigo Takamori in the province of Satsuma. Their story was the basis for the fictional 2003 film, “The Last Samurai.”

Created by Kartofile. Version 1.2 released September 6, 2007.
