While Poseidon and Zeus took care of affairs above ground their eldest brother Hades presided over a gloomy, treacherous underworld simply called ‘Hades’. It was not unlike our modern concept of Heaven, Purgatory and Hell, except not as well sign posted. One wrong turn on the glorious road to Elysion could have you treading on the sacred meadows of Aspohel, punishable by eternal torture. Luckier souls might only suffer debilitating memory loss by the shores of Lethe or wind up as snack food for the resident three-headed hound Cerberus, a comparatively merciful end all things considered.
